one rug at most, I have yet to meet a horse that needs more than two rugs, and that entails say a lightweight stable and lightweight outdoor, not two HW ones.
(I dont class the ones without lining as lw btw,I mean something with a bit of lining but not much).
My skinny, thin skinned tb has at most had a LW stable under a MW stable. Don't think anything needs more than that! Event hat to me looks very restrictive.

i like layers...you can do according to weather, i have mw rugs and if really cold i can add either a fleece or a lw stable underneath....plus with layers i get to buy more rugs, thus feeding my addiction! i once knew someone who put the following on and UNclipped newforest....fleece, rambo insulator, mw stable hw stable, then called the vet next day to tell them it had colic

it was just hot, the vet gave them a rollicking

My poor bunch have to make do with one measly medium weight each. Only the arab mare has one with a neck, the others have to get iced manes. The rugs are more to keep the wind off them and the occasional ice storm too.

My clipped, hunted arab went out in a heavy weight full neck masta and slept in it too, he was fine in that. If he needed more, I changed to lighter weight layers. They are all so different though, some feel the cold, some don't, just like people I guess.

Stuff what other people say, she's your horse, you do what keeps her comfortable at that particular time. If she is cold feed her more and add another layer, if she's hot, take a layer off. I can't help but think that lots of thick layers would be like wearing three dufflecoats - you couldn't move!
