Hi everyone,

In this week's reader poll we are asking — what is the most you have spent on a horse? Visit the H&H homepage now to vote.

And if you have already voted — how much is too little to get anything of quality, and when does it become silly money?

Perhaps you have spent a substantial amount on a safe and steady allrounder? Or spent a small fortune on an animal to end up with nothing but problems? Or (and if you have, it isn't fair) paid a nominal fee and ended up with a superstar?

Thanks everyone!

Victoria

I've never gone over 3K (infact much less) and have had a range of decent horses and ponies which have competed in all spheres successfully

The most I spent was £3600 [inc 2yr old saddle] on my last horse - an 11 year old, 16hh SJ schoolmistress. She was a sensible allrounder [flatwork was not good though] but had jumped BN and Disc and was very straightforward in all respects.

I think you can get something of quality for under £1000 if you're happy to have an ex racer or a NF pony and put the work in. If you're after a warmblood then I'd say around £3000 is around the lowest you're likely to get a youngster with really good breeding and conformation without any major quirks or flaws.

I personally believe that it should be possible to get a nice horse that has the scope to compete at Foxhunter or Novice BE and do reasonably well for no more than £8500.

Anymore than that is silly money IMO, unless the horse has serious potential for upper level competition, or is a complete push button ride and guaranteed to be in the money every time out.

I've never spent more than £2000 when buying a horse, and have had some real stars. My best friend spent £250,000 on a graded Hannovarian stallion from Germany, which she then gelded and has had nothing but problems with (health related) he is now for sale at £4000!

I've never spent anymore than 4.5k on a horse. I had a potentially larger budget than that for my last horse, but everything I viewed of that price I thought I would be better off getting a younger cheaper horse and making up its value myself.

Both horses I have sold have been sold for 2x what I brought them for, which wasn't a profit because of how long I had them for, but at least meant I was adding value to them

I think bargains are out there, and also some horses are vastly overpriced, but at the end of the day, horses are worth as much as people will pay for them!

Captain, a KWPN Gelderlander cost £2500, but whilst he is well bred and branded he is very quirky and was in poor condition.
Fany Du Champ, an Ardennes (Trait Ardennais) cost £2300 but that was more to reflect her unflappable nature and weight carrying ability rather than the fact she is daughter to one of the best Ardennes stallions ever.

I personally would be loath to pay more than £4000.

my last horse was reduced to £3,500.00 ( a potential eventer) i spent nearly as much again on vets fees. after an upsetting two years realised his health wasn't going to improve and now he is in a lovely loan home who just wanted a light hack.
horse before him was £500.00 and was a star, never ill, who i sadly lost to colic after 14 years ownership.

I wouldn't spend more than 4K on a horse because I ride for pleasure and I feel that anything with more potential would be better off in a competition home.

gutted!!

My most expensive horse was a registered Sec D mare who I bought just backed at 5 yrs old for £1000.

My current mare also cost £1000, but the first one cost me an additional £50 for them to deliver her, making her the most expensive I've ever bought!

Mazzie (Argentine polo pony) cost me £6,000, but should really have been £8,000 so I got a good deal. Genie cost me half that and was overpriced a bit really, but she's worth her weight in gold to me!

i have never spent more than £1000 on any of the horses i have bought, my big lad cost £550, flash cost £425 iv had him 16 yrs he is quirky but i have trunk loads of rosettes from him and he is super safe plod for my mam who is disabled,
H cost £500 she is very well bred, proven broodmare and she is doing really well and starting to show a lot of promise under saddle, i hope to show her this year

My most expensive horse cost me, £1000.00, a ride and drive 17.2 shire, everything else i have cost under £300.

£700 for mine- but he was very much a rescue/project pony who needed alot of time investing in him. At peak fitness he would have been worth around £3500-£4000.
My mums mare is a pure bred Arab who she bought 10 years ago as a newly backed 4 year old, for £1800. She's never been worth more than that due to injuries and lack of experience.

I'm saving for my next horse now and will be looking to spend no more than £3500 on a happy hacker to do local RC activities with.

Why would you spend £250k on a stallion then geld him?

my friend spent £10k on her current horse, but he's completely bombproof and does everything, dressage, sj, endurance, whp, hunts, fun rides etc. although he mainly does eventing at open PC level/pre novice BE

They were my exact words at the time. She said he wasn't happy being a stallion. Sadly she has serious money to spend - that was nothing to her.

Do I just find that hilarious because I'm a man?

The most i've spent was £3500 on a 2 year old well bred WB. Only to find out 2 years later that she had inoperable PSD and was never to be ridden again!
Current horse cost me £1500 - right place right time - owner honestly said home more important than price. She is WB with ok breeding and prooving to be a bit of a star!!

$4500, sold her a few weeks later to a rodeo stock producer who'd seen her in the field for half as much again, well, I did say make me an offer! She is now on the professional rodeo circuit, I saw her on TV at the Calgary Stampede last year.

Some people on here surely must have spent more than 5K?

I think the most I would spend is 5K
And the most I have actaully spent is £2500

Most expensive horse I've had cost £4,500 and turns out wasn't worth it at all sadly. He was the priciest, yet totally wrong. Ever since I've not gone over £3k. My current horse cost me £2,800 and was worth every single penny as he's turned into an amazing horse.
