My mums had to make the tough decision to rehome her mare due to the fact that shes already struggling financially, is now pregnant and on her own with no support.
She's a 15year old 14hh welsh who we have been told has been ridden/driven in the past but we never have as she can be very spooky and we are both novices when it comes to riding.

We contacted rehoming charities today after we had asked family/friends if they could take her on but none could. We contacted welfare places but we were told unless she's a welfare case they can't take her. So basically we stop feeding her and they might do something then which obviously we won't do!!

So what on earth can we do?? ive advertised her tonight as free to a good home. Something I said I'd never do but what other options do we have left?! I can't afford to take her on myself, absolutely no way otherwise I would because I don't want to see her go.

So does anyone have any ideas, because this is getting desperate now and despite mum being responsible and trying to rehome her before it gets to the point where she will suffer. Nobody is listening :(

Sorry to hear about your Mums circumstances.

You havent stated any reasons why this mare cannot be sold (no vices/behavioural problems etc?). As long as you advertise her as 'not suitable for a novice' and are truthful to viewers. This way it might help your mum financially and also you are more likely to find someone who actually wants to give her a good home.

Sorry should have made that clearer! She's not been ridden in at the very least 6/7 years and we've never seen her ridden so can't really sell her as rideable.
She could be sold as a project I guess, but who's going to pay for a horse like her when there's so many untouched youngsters out there? She's a sweetheart to handle day to day but gets very spooky when out of her comfort zone, one thing I can guarentee is she will never be a novice ride.

If you have to advertise her, then at least advertise her for meat value, or just above. In all honesty though, if I had a basically worthless horse that I couldn't put on permanent loan locally, through word of mouth, then I'd pts, before I handed it over to a stranger.

If you sell her for £1 or free to good home there (sadly) is a chance she ends up in a market where the meat man will pay £200 ish for her and some hideous person will make a quick buck (appaling but it does happen)
Can you put the word around your friends/ farrier/ instructor etc and put her on loan as a companion? She's a nice size for that and I assume nice to handle (if you and you mum have had her for so long).
I have to say I tend to agree with above, if loan somewhere you can keep an eye on her is impossible I'd seriously consider PTS (crazy but it is a sign of the very tough times we are living in sadly)

If your on facebook try looking under heading of all things horsey and your area ie Norfolk /Suffolk/Essex,loads of local horsey people use these sites to buy and sell .The site is free to use and you will probably be able to view your potential buyer,it will give you idea if they are honest horse lovers or dealers.Project horse is another option.Good luck in finding her home.
Where are you based I have a friend who buys and sells cobs and she makes sure they go to good homes. If you are interested pm me and ill contact her.

Don't worry we would make sure we know where she's going etc and ask for a bit of money if that's nessicary we won't just let someone walk off with her. Was thinking of saying the first few months full loan and then transfer the ownership if both parties are happy.
My mum wouldn't consider PTS. My view on that's slightly different but if it was my own mare I think I would be of the

Could you take your mum to an auction & show her where worthless horses go? Maybe get her some reading on dodgy 'rescue' centres, live export, & how easy it is for someone with bad intentions to pose as a nice person. No horse is completely worthless, they all have a value as meat, so very easy for someone unscrupulous to pretend they have a home for your worthless horse, only to stick it in the next auction or send it to an abbatoir. I bet (if I was scum) I could take your horse, sedate it (either acp or dehydration, hunger etc) & ride it round nicely enough to convince an unaccompanied novice it was a lovely first horse. Quick money.
