What's the strangest thing you've had happen at your yard?

Last week I was leading Beauty and a another liverys dog, patch. Our yard backs onto an estate, Patch started going mad and so did Beauty who started pulling back towards the stable. I took one step back and as soon as I did a brick came flying over the fence to where I was stood.

Not me but my daughter. She was out hacking on one of her regular off road routes which is on a circular track through woods, when you come full circle the tracks are quite close and you can just see through the trees to the track parallel to where you are. Hope that made sense! Anyway Daughter is hacking along and glances sideways as something catches her eyes through the trees on the track at the other side, a lady with long hair riding a large grey horse. Daughter doesn't think much of it because you often see or bump into other people riding but thinks to herself that they are going to meet and pass just round the corner. Daughter glances over again and the grey horse disappears out of view for a few seconds as she rounds the corner, she is away to say 'Good afternoon' just where they should meet and there is nothing there, lady on grey horse has vanished. Strange my daughter thought so trotted on down a few metres where she had last seen her and there is nothing to be seen for the next half mile. The tracks are bordered with boggy ground and large trees close together and no sign of her in there either (not that anyone in their right mind would take there horse into boggy uneven ground) To this day, she still cannot understand how they disappeared into thin air.

A family friend owns her own land and many people have heard the sounds of dozens of horses galloping across the fields, the hoofbeats thumping the ground but there is never anything to be seen just the audible sound of horses in flight. :)

Whoa! That is amazing - thank goodness you did that!

and another one. At my RS, it was a few days after my dad had had a heart attck and he was in hospital, It was also the anniversairy of my grandads death and I didn't do very well in my lesson (pony spooked, stuff like that) I was cleaning a bridle with my back to the door. I heard someone come in and felt them put their arms around me and say ' its all going to be alright beth' looked up but no-one was there  I swear to this day that it was my grandad reassuring me

Another one - our YM lives in the flat below our tackroom, in a building that's a few hundred years old. Anyway, apparently she sometimes hears things at night in the rooms above her flat, footsteps and furniture being dragged across the floor, that kind of thing :S *shivers* I don't believe in ghosts and stuff, but from experience living in a 100 year old house, I know that the weird noises old houses make can be really unnerving!

I've never experienced anything like this *touches wood* but I'm not dreading the next time I have to catch Belle after dark! I can guarante these stories will pop into my head jst as I'm about to set off!

Must try and go with another livery or make sure OH can come

I have a not so nice one :( I used to keep my horses on a farm just down the road from my house and next to the farm was one of my best friends with her own horses she had 3. Now for a full week we'd go down in a morning and find perfectly neat plats in her horses manes just at the bottom - we though it was wierd but dint think much of it - we just thought it was someone messing around, then like a week after it started we went down in the mornin to find all 3 horses had massive open wounds on their backs like on their spine line - looked like they had just been cut open :/ - never found out who did it and it never happened again but it really creeped us out :/ x

our yard is on the grounds of a stately home/estate park so lots of woods/tracks. it also has an old peoples nursing home on the grounds which employs lots of foreign workers. last year whilst leading my horse to the field, he became very agitated and spooky. as i dragged him on i turned round to see to nursing home workers having sex in an opening in the woods!!! to this day not sure who was more embaressed! me, my horse, or them!! he quickly pulled up his kegs and mumbled in some foriegn language and she just lay there looking the other way!!!! i reported them to the nursing home!!!

I was on a livery yard which was split into 3 small seperate yards. The 'top' yard had the best stables on it, they were the biggest, airiest, neicest tack room etc When I got on the yard one of the stables was empty. Rather sadly its last occupant had broken its leg in the field and had to be PTS.
I took the stable and 2 days later my horse injured itself. Because he had to be on box rest I moved him to another stable where he had more company.....he soon got better.

A new girl came, horse went in the stable. Horse blew a tendon. Never recovered.
Next horse in that stable became severely unwell ended up having to be PTS.
The horse after that coliced and had to be PTS
All these happened literally within 3 months of the horses going into that one stable. All of the horses were young and fit as well.

Finally the YO decided that even though it was a coincedence he was going to turn the stable into a rug room.

*screams, then runs away from thread to hide behind sofa.... again!!!*

At the yard i used to work on I had a lesson in the winter with a friend of mine 9-10pm so it was dark when we were finished and my friends horse was a well built Sec D who took forever to cool down so we were eventually finished about 11pm we were walking across the yard to the car park in the pitch black when we heard a noise, indistinct but not a noise you would associate with a yard, we started walking again holding onto each other looking around when suddenly we heard a growl and a sound like something being dragged across the concrete, we bolted for the car park dived in the car and drove. The next morning we came down to work and found all the horses on the main yard loose, including a stallion who is seperated from the rest of the yard by a fence. The YO lived on site and said she had heard nothing, the CCTV had broken between the hours of 11pm and 3am and only showed the horses wandering around the yard afterward. Also a boat that had been abandoned in the pond on the yard had disappeared. Scared the life out of me.

Also when I moved yard I was told it was haunted, many people claimed to have seen a young girl wandering around and music playing, I did my best to avoid the yard after dark after what happened on my old yard but in the winter after lessons it was unavoidable. I never saw or heard anything until about a year after I moved when I came back from a lesson with my friend to out the horses and trailer away, trailer was done and we were just rugging horses up when we heard music, shaking all over I peeked out of my stable and saw nothing, rugged up at the speed of light, threw her feed in and grabbed my friends arm. We walked out of the barn to see the tack room, which was upstairs in the barn opposite, door open with the light on and the music seemed to be coming from there, we then heard a girl laugh behind us near the stables and turned round to see something white flash across the door way, we exited the yard as fast as our feet could carry us. After that we heard the music a lot and nothing ever happened to us or the horses on the yard and everyone on there came to view her as a kind of good luck charm, although she did like to scare the life out of newcomers, I think it amused her lol

had horses on a livery yard where they lived out, next field was used for cows and 2 big bulls. late one evening just turning dusk my daughter and myself walked up the field to do late check..Looked over and saw a person walking across large field, all cows staring at him, we promptly shouted that there was bulls in the field, next thing the figure moved towards a big tree and disappeared .. we both ran like the clappers and went in the light for future visits. Asked several people and they had seen the same. WOOOOOOOOOOOO

Aha I have a spooky one...

So I was riding my old horse out on my own, he was a fizzy tb who didnt need much help to get a bit crazy. Was on a sort of gallops, just a grassy bit along a side of a field that the stupid people from my yard used to gallop along whatever the weather (slippy, hard ground ).

I swear I could hear horses behind me. Flat out, galloping horses. I moved over to the side, so they could pass, my horse started wobbly-ing, jogging, sideways etc. Could still hear the horses and it sounded like a hunt.

Waited for the horses to pass, and they just didnt. Needless to say, I have never ridden there since that. Was the middle of the day too

Oh, and the yard which I kept that horse at burned down at some point in the past. It was just rebuilt. Seriously spooky feeling in there at night, might have been me and my overactive imagination, and sometimes horses would go all funny in the stables, like they'd all seen something in the back corner where the wheelbarrows were kept...

I used to work fora trekking centre & we did full day rides stopping at a pub for lunch, The horses would get tied up in a field just down the road. The trekkers would got to the pub & get there drinks etc, whilst the leaders would loosen girths, secure reins & offer water. Then we would go to the pub. We would stop for at least a hour or more. After lunch we'd go back to the horses & nearly everytime we went to the pub someone would have turned all the saddle around so that the cantle was above the withers. The horses were never distressed or looked liked they had been disturbed. I dont work there now but never found out who done it.

I'm loving the spooky ones although I will never sleep tonight ...

Mine is a sad one :(
One of my old yards was a farm with lots and lots of land, there was loads of us on grass livery and we all had a field to ourselves.
One of the liverys had two massive ID geldings and everything was fine for the first few weeks but soon when she came in the morning her horses would be in a different field with all gates closed behind them, then it started the horses were being released in the middle of the night and one night they had to be rescued off of a dual carrigeway a good bit away from yard! So the farmer started to put chains round gates, electric tape etc & still everything would be as he left it but horses would be out! Sadly one night they got out the big grey went over a cattlegrid and got his leg trapped, he had to be put down there and then as the leg was completely broken.
After that it stopped completely.
What I find weird about this is it was only these two horses that were picked on and for a consistent length of time ... she never did find out who was responsible.

nothing really scarey or spooky has happend to me at the yard, but I always get the constant feeling of being watched, but I think that has more to do with the nosey neighours than ghosts!! :D Although I keep seeing things in the corner of my eye, especially in one of the barns.......................:S

The first yard me and my mare was on was down a long track and no one lived on site (you couldn't see it from the road) It was a Saturday and I had been at work at 6am and finished work at 2pm so went straight to the yard to muck out and ride. A friend of mine turned up around 3pm and suggested we went out for a hack. We caught our mares and went out no one else was on the yard when we left.

We got back after about an hour and she go our other friends mare in as she was at Stoneleigh. Our friend turned up and decided to groom her mare, as she pulled her tail up to brush it felt not right and she realized that it was covered in dry blood ( she was black and it was dark) She called the Vet and discovered her mare had been cut under her tail with what the vet had thought a Stanley knife.

Just under a week later my friend who's horse had been slashed and me met up at the yard very early as I started work at 6am I found a flat cap in my stable. I was frantic and we took the cap to the police. The cap turned out to belong to the farmer who produced our hay.

We left the yard not long after that but six months later we heard of another mare being slashed under the tail on our old yard.

PS love this thread

QR: this isn't strange, as in creepy, but I think it's quite cool - the yard where I keep my boy is a big family farm and a few weeks ago - they had a festival there!! it was mental, there were all these hippies camping and loads of live music and cider. I LOVED IT.

did get caught and accused of being a "snooping chavvy" cos I was standing by my horse's field with two hands full of feed "whispering" loudly his name to try to get him to come over. Needless to say he thought i was off my rocker and ignored me. (possibly because it was dark too).

Haven't read the rest of this thread but will have a gander now....

Fact often seems stranger than fiction...some amazing tales...
Not on my own yard thankfully, but one where I used to work, usually alone; I used to arrive in the morning, unlock the barn and sometimes find headcollars and rug straps cut through in a distinct pattern- it was usually 2-3 diagonal cuts half through the leather then one cut all the way through!. I could only think that someone with a grudge and a weird attitude had a key (worrying enough) until one morning I saw a headcollar in the sand school. There were no footprints. I walked over and picked it up and it fell in half. Yup, slashed through. Really freaked me out. Then some time later I arrived at the yard about 8am alone, and had a strange feeling. Instead of getting out of the car I sat there waiting for the feeling to pass when suddenly the car was bumped downwards as though something heavy had landed on the roof! I just froze, no way to escape as I had locked the gates down the drive. I sat there frozen for ages before I ventured out- nothing to be seen. Left the job soon afterwards.

Dogstar, was there nothing on the car? No marks?! Sppoooookkky!

Keep them coming guys I love stuff like this! xxxx
