concussion (this was, would you believe it due to the stables being pulled on top of my head, well the front of a block of 4) yes you read that right!!
Ok, guys, I'm thinking of starting a (much safer) goldfish appreciation society. Anyone want to sell their horses and join up? Unless you know of a high mortality rate associated with goldfish handlers?
I've had a few. Presently recovering from a fall ewhere I landed on my feet but managed to break both sides of my ankle and my leg. Pins and plate required and 9 months recovery time although doubtful I will ever get ankle working properly again.
Also a few years ago came down with horse on xc and landed on my shoulder shettered collar bone into 7 pieces pins and plate again.
In other accidents I have broken other collar bone and arm. I am trying to give up the habit!
Have had horse flip over backwards on top of me, then roll on me. Still have a big dent in my thigh from it.
Came off another one which ran straight over the top of me, Shattered my Jaw (had to have reconstructive facial surgery and now have a full metal jaw) Broke my arm (again have plates in there holding it together) and fractured my kneecap.
Came off my friends horse when I was hacking him - no idea how it happened as I got concussion and don't remember a thing about it.
The owner used to fall off a lot and I had just commented that I didn't know how she kept falling off him - he was so good you'd have to throw yourself on the floor. Then again I don't remember anything so maybe that's what I did!
Actually not too bad at the time, although now I have a fully metal jaw (oh yes cosmetic facial surgery on the NHS, no more lines on my face! and if I get too many I'll just say that the plates are playing up!) TBH the arm was the worst, they plastered me wrong the first time so when they took the plastercast off the bone that was originally fractured had broken fully and was sticking out the side of my arm (hence the lump that appeared in the plaster cast) Took them another 12 weeks of plaster cast till they agreed to operate. But fighting fit now and rather bionic! I think shock took over at the time and the adrenalin stopped all the pain, although now I have no feeling in the lower part of my face any more as when they put the plates in the nerves in my lower jaw were severed.
Monty reared up and fell over backwards on me, luckily came away with badly bruised leg!
My other accident was worse for my friend and our instructor
Took D x country schooling, D was full of it jumped one fence big and then bucked. I fell off on my head apparently, I cannot remember a thing and drove my instructor mad at A & E by repeating myself over and over again. Once she had lost the will to live my friend took over. I was sent home bruised with concussion and my OH had 2 minates of me repeating myself, got fed up and wrote what happened on a piece of paper and went to bed, nice eh?
Broke my elbow, arm and collar bone in one go when i was 13 - saddle slipped as I galloped around a corner and hit a big lump of cotswold stone - I then had an 8 mile ride home on a nappy, rearing mare, ouch!!!
5 years ago I cracked two vertabrae being bbucked off by my 17.1 warmblood, air ambulance came over and couldn't land because a fog had come down by this point and I had to be stretchered across 1/4 mile of rough common land to be got into the back of a landrover ambulance. Ws mucking out again after 2 weeks and back on a horse after a month as i was so bored (was still meant to be flat on my back at this point, oops!)
2 years ago 16.2 dressage warmblood bucked me off. I got back on and duffed him up as you do, got x-rayed and nothing was visable although it hurt big time. Was told to rest it and gently get back to normal. 6 months later of running 8 miles 3 times a week and riding 4 horses a day, i discovered after a bone scan i had a hairline fracture going straight through my knee cap.
Out hacking on roads, on point 2 pointers, friends horse tried to kick my horse, hit my shin instead, breaking it, my hose bolted over bridge into oncoming car.
I have been unbelievably lucky at not hurting myself! Worst was knocking myself out when I came off my horse jumping at home. My Mum found me walking up the road with my hat on and my horse in his stable with all his tack on!
My closest near miss was turning out evil devil of a horse. One second he was walking next to me, the next his shod hoof was right in front of my face. I don't want to know how close it was but I was extremely lucky.
umm, ruptured spleen, punctured lung, broken humerus, dislocated shoulder, all in 1 go... and that was before i fell off the horse (rider coming the other way hit me shoulder-to-shoulder). he was uninjured.
blowing my knee to pieces landing upright on it after being bucked off while getting on... fractured bottom of femur, torn meniscus, ruptured cruciate.
other than those two, been very very lucky. a couple of concussions, and that's it.
even fell down huge drainage ditch with young mare last spring (she spooked, landed on wet grass at the edge, slipped, and in we went) and we both emerged very smelly and muddy but unscathed.
Oh got three:
1. I went over a jump and pony didn't; well I half went over and my back broke the jump pole. Luckily it didn't break my back.
2. Got thrown off against a brick wall slide down the brick wall totally winded with my legs out across the track, so horse decided to come around again and make sure he stomped all four feet on my legs. Had bruises for weeks.
3. Totally my own fault - forgot to tighten up girth, went into canter and gracefully ended up in the saddle underneath the pony with front legs thumping on helmet and couldn't get off until pony came to a stop. I know they say don't grip with your legs, but trust me in a situation like that it works!!!
when i was breaking in my welsh section D mare years and years ago, something frightened her as i went to get on, and she went wild with me half on, i was thrown into our JCB! i was so lucky i was a bit chubby, it saved me from many broken bones, but i was a bit of a mess, most awful extensive bruising, and my leg and jaw in particular have never been the same since!
not as bad as some of you, but i was only about 12 and it was quite nasty, its definitely my worst
got bad concussion last december from an impromptu jump at standstill, i felt cack for a week
I was at a pc rally once and Toto tripped himself up over a jump. We both fell and I got kicked in the head (I was wearing my hat) and he over reached badly. Otherwise we were shocked but ok.
Another time I was out hacking on Toto and deciding to go for a canter. Something spooked him and we somehow ended up bolting straight down a really steep hill and out onto a road. I fell off on the road and Toto galloped off. The clever pony had found his way home and was discovered later waiting by the gate to get into the yard. It turned out he'd dodged some people who'd tried to catch him on the road. He was slightly lame and I had a scraped side but we were so lucky not to get hit by a car
Blisters in the 'lady garden' from unsuitable underwear!
A broken collarbone from schooling a youngster that came down in the middle of an oxer.
Mutiple concussion from doing XC on old crazy JA jumping pony.
Numerous other creaks and aches too many to list.
I fractured my spine in two places backing my youngster! oh and i knocked myself out once after falling off and hitting my head on a jump (i was wearing a hat at the time).
the general broken toes/fingers/ribs that come from being round horses for over 20 years plus a nasty XC accident as a kid that left me with serve concussion
Water complex, jumped the log at the top and as i went down the bank (about a 15 ft slope) into the stream the bank collapsed - i ended up under pony in the water, got back on, finished the course.. apparently.
Very bruised and battered and not remembering my name!
10 days later i was Sjing same pony and she tripped coming into a wall (about 1.15), catapulted me through it, then jumped and kicked me in the head.
Very bad concussion and a short stay in hospital.
Ive never really been all that confident jumping since!
Not major compared to some people, but it really shook me up.
Jumping a horse who was very nappy over a 4' course at home. It refused a jump so I went to turn him and he leapt it from a standstill. Went crashing through, flipped I fell off and broke my arm. He nearly landed on me. I haven't jumped since and that was 6 years ago now.
Another one was totally my fault. No paying attention and my old boy bucked. I fell out the side door but over the arena fence with my foot caught in the stirrup. He bolted I got dragged over the fence and my boots ripped so I fell in a heap on the floor. I was fine, but felt a right prat.
