Sitting here missing being around and riding horses after shattering my knee back in February after being run over by a horse and not being able to ride or really be around them since.

So I was wondering what's the worst injury you've had and how long was it before you were able to ride again

  2. 1 damaged my back in 1977, .................................................. still effects me know and have sciatica weak calf and back issues now as result (fallen on back several times since )
  3. 1970's wrist broken............................................... no effect
  4. 2000's . skyers thumb off my mare falling ............................................- result deformed thumb cannot grip easily
  5. 2015 fall off new mare who slipped on the road ..................................... permanent dislocation of the left shoulder
  6. 2013 boy bronked me off on concrete (livery caused his accident which led to this)......................................... fracture humerus for 9 months
  7. 2007 mare got too close to tree. result planters fasciitis and collapsed arches.

Just some of them - I think the back is the worse as when it goes out I cannot move, and the sciatica numbness in my thigh comes on and off every day.

Recent knee replacement still trying to recover.

Broken lower back when a young horse reared and lost her balance, falling straight onto me. Three months later, I recovered enough to crawl around and then walk slowly. Six months later, back on board a quiet pony. A year from the accident, back on a different horse. I rode from aged 21 until this year when I got to 77. My balance has been reduced by contracting M E. I have a 28yr old16hh Arabian gelding who is still sharp as a tack. I don't want to be further disabled by coming off him, so I stopped riding him earlier this year.

Broke my ankle and lower leg last November. Weber c displaced fracture of fib with fragments and broke through my ankle joint in two places, aswell as an avulsion fracture to the talus. Basically I took my foot internally off the bottom of my leg, so I snapped through the deltoid and other ligaments. It was a bit of a mess.
4 hours of surgery to fix it with 2 plates and 10 screws. Predicated 4-5 month recovery by the surgeon, due to the unusual nature of the break. Was back on board at 12 weeks. Hardware all still in and causes me no issues other than a tendon occasionally twangs on my fib plate.

I do tend to bounce back from things quickly though.

2000 came off a 4yr old onto a concrete yard and landed on my feet (unfortunately). Tibial plateau fracture which I thought, at the time, was just soft tissue injury. I could sort of walk and thought an xray and home would be the outcome. No, 10 days in hospital, surgery and home with a plate and 6 screws in my left leg. Plaster for 12 weeks hip to toe with a hinge at my knee so I could keep it mobilised. I still have a knee problem and numbness down the outside of my leg, but I ws riding again in about 9 months.

Knocked down, trampled by a massive ID, she stood on the back of my knee, half of my calf ripped off and was hanging by a little flap. Apart from being sh!t scared to go in a field of horses ever since, my patella slips so sometimes I’m on crutches. The ligament is currently catching so walking isn’t fun. After a dvt in January, the leg swelled up massively and one doctor mentioned that the lack of flesh in part of the leg was contributing to the swelling. Ten fricking years on! 🤬

- Pressure fracture at L3 in my spine - was riding again stupidly early as I had a show I had qualified for, with a LOT of painkillers, don't be stupid like me as I have lasting damage now as a result.
- Bulge at C5/C6 following a pallet falling onto the top of my head from a stack of hay bales (or we are assuming this is the trauma that caused it). Didn't stop riding for that one, thankfully as far as bulges go it's not a serious one.

Got on a friends horse once it reared up just as my bum was in the saddle went over backwards, my riding hat had a crack the whole length at the back and I had concussion, I also had a bruise from my neck all down one side to past my knee I was lucky she didn't fall on me I was back riding after about 2 weeks.

Arabi fell on me whilst cantering in the school my leg was trapped underneath him I smashed my ankle and it was displaced had surgery with a plate and screws, my ligaments and tendons were completely torn couldn't walk properly for months, I was back riding after 4 months.

Fractured skull, a small fracture but horrendous nevertheless. I was found on a concrete pad having been knocked from a very low stool and presumably hitting my head, no one saw but thankfully heard a bit of commotion and found me. I was bleeding from my ear (bleed on brain) the headaches were hideous as was the constant spinning and dizziness, they took over a year to go fully. I think I was back riding after a couple of months

Had a rather nasty break of a finger, basically splintered into a lot of pieces, I went for an x-ray expecting them to splint it, was sent for a 3 hour op next day. The finger set at an awful angle but i was doing stable jobs straight away, 2 months later I caught a haynet that was falling with that hand and all the screws bent and popped out 🙈 had another op, thankfully it healed at a better angle but i took a month off stable duty as i was warned the next stage would be amputation…. The surgeon was not amused!

Fractured 2 lower vertebrae from being ejected at top speed by a runner, shot over its head, over the gate and landed on the concrete the other side. 4 weeks out, driving the horsebox was blooming hard for another month or more. Was in my early 20s then.

Dec 2013, new ISH straight off the box bounced under saddle and I bitterly regretted not pulling my pedals up, I bounced once.... foot landed back in pedal and I snapped my ankle. Back on board 6 weeks later but still have trouble with it now as arthritis set in.

Have had 3 x GA's in the last 12 months and after the 2nd blooming ignored some recovery instructions, rode when I was ready and was careful. So not an injury, but still had time out of the saddle each time, longest was nearly 4 weeks through August.

I guess I have just got lucky. 12 years ago I crashed and burned. Paralysis down my upper right side including my right lung. It has been a long hard road. Today , I turned a corner. I took Bob out on a Hunt hack. The Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds arranged a hack around Epsom downs as their normal venues were waterlogged. Two lasses from the yard were going ,and I thought ,why the hell not ! (an awful lot of reasons revolving around Bob notacob (full name Bob this is why we don't go hunting at all cob) .It turned out that my problem was arthritis and my knees couldnt take the trotting ,But, Bob bless him ,was prepared to walk (hound jog) while he had full sight of the field disappearing in front of him. Bob screamed and shouted but always remained safe for me. HE WAS PREPARED TO TURN AWAY FROM THE FIELD AND TAKE MY ROUTE (AND WHEN THE FIELD ULTIMATELY REAPPEARED BEHIND HIM ,he totally blanked them .(if you don't want to hack with me then I don't want to hack with you).I think bob had a good day but I had a fantastic day discovering that my Irish Draught nut lob understood .

CT has this one hands down.
My most painful was falling off when landing from a jump, I was off balance and the horse turned sharply from under me on landing, I came of qith force and I I hit the ground on my back my arm whipped out, all the muscles front and back of my chest were torn, driving was excruciating as was everything else.
My worst was a horse in a lesson slipped over in canter, I was still sat correctly qhen it landed, the stirrup crushed my foot, 8 breaks visible on xray, that still bothers me 35 yrs later, back in the saddle with cast on after a week back to work (full time stable hand) and driving in 2 weeks.

Ooh, various mishaps. Compound fracture to finger when pony trod on it on the road. Did Boxing Day New Forest point to point two weeks later. Broken collarbone from a fall hunting, cracked ribs and bruised coccyx at least 3 times, cracked breast bone from when I fell off my trotter mare and she trod on my chest with her back foot, cracked pelvis and severe internal bruising from coming off on rutted hardbaked clay two summers ago. The scariest one was waking up as I was loaded into an ambulance. I had been knocked out and had no memory of what had happened or any idea where my horse was!

Fell off on to road, happy there were no breaks but had to go to hospital where they found a bleed on my brain which was pretty serious as I am on blood thinners. It was a bit touch and go at the beginning as they couldnt stop the bleed I stayed in hospital for over 2 weeks and after 3 CT scans they let me go home. The doctors told me that as I’d had one bleed I was very likely to get another and may not be so lucky next time. Friends and family suggested not riding so I have reluctantly given up, mainly due to not wanting my dogs to be left without me. A very difficult decision and I know if I didn’t have dogs I would have carried on as horses have been in my life for over 65 years

Don’t open the spoiler if you don’t like anatomical very graphic pictures. Also, don’t quote the post without wanting to see the picture cos you will see it if you quote it. I haven’t ridden since but I’m currently considering it.

That's a pretty impressive wound! Last leg I saw as bad as that had just had an artic drive over it 🙀

I got knocked out and ended up being taken to A&E with a temporary paralysed arm and a potential head injury/brain bleed that saw me try to punch and kick the consultant, tell him to 'eff off' whilst my eyes rolled back in my head and I repeated a phrase over and over.

Blue light job to nearest hospital for a CT scan with an anesthetist in the back of the ambulance with me.

Was November time, banned from riding till the spring. Was off work for weeks with exhaustion/sickness due to the concussion.

How did it end up looking CT? I know it gives you big problems with circulation ☹️

I am in awe of you tough bunch. Worst fall I ever had only knocked me out and did some sort of damage to my neck, not sure what but it showed up on X-rays after a motorcycle accident. You really are an amazing bunch and for so many of you to continue riding after horrendous injuries, just wow.

Blimey horses are a stupid hobby aren’t they?!

My worst was horse reared up over on top of me as i was doing my girth up. It was a May bank holiday. Knocked out and broken pelvis. Back riding about 3 months later - although it was quite uncomfortable! Bought new horse and fell off the following May on the other bank holiday and broke my ankle. Entire my fault - never use a shoe shine to clean your saddle! 🙄🤣. Walked on broken ankle for a while as St John’s ambulance person told me it wouldn’t be broken and then parents got to take me to hospital when I really couldn’t manage the pain any longer! Was told I was lucky it had displaced which would have required surgery.

I was quite nervous about riding on May bank holidays for a few years after that!
