Well it can happen but you dont sound like your voice or opinion would keep quiet for a second i must admit . I am quite sure you would have had a real good go at him but would it have done the horse any good . No in fact your ranting may have frightened her even more. I believe i did the best for my horse as always. Good job we are not all the same!

I just do not have anytime for abuse of any kind, I remember back in 1975 mmmmm that long I hear you all say...lol, that a farrier came to our yard to shoe a couple of horses and one of them being our loyal hunter of 17hh, at the time I was only 14 years but my dad was there and witnessed the farrier wallop our horse with the edge of his rasp because he would not keep still while he was having his hind shoes nailled on, This farrier did not know that he had been seen to wallop the horse until my dad stromed up to him and walloped him back with a whip right across the back of his neck and told him to leave the horse alone and get off the yard and said I would not let you shoe my rocking horse you evil ba*tard clear off, that is the only time I have really seen my dad get really mad...

I don't rant. I am always calm and clear about any comments I may make, and in this situation? Absolutely no way would I sit quietly and allow a farrier to hit my horse with a hammer, ripping the horses rug in the process.

Anyone who thinks that watching someone hit a horse with a hammer without something being said to that person seems rather odd to me I'm afraid. I wouldn't even allow a farrier to hit someone elses horse with a hammer, so I sure as heck wouldn't sit quietly if this were happening to one of my own horses.

And yes you are quite correct, my mouth does not lock up when faced with cruelty happening before my very eyes.

Ahh so you think this is a snide comment? So you would say nothing if someone was hitting your horse with a hammer? Wow! Quite eye-opening what some people think is acceptable treatment of horses.

I agree with Baleofhay's actions the deed was done and ranting at the farrier would not turn back time, she ensured it didnt happen again, I am pretty sure if the farrier had went to hit the horse again she would of had something to say??

Its not as if she stood back and let the farrier repeatedly whack the horse with a hammer, sometimes as hard as it is staying quiet is just the best option- I doubt that screaming at the farrier would of made him change anyway.
I am only new to the forum and have read many of your posts Tia and you do seem very knowledgable however very harsh at times. You can harldy blame baleofhay for farriers actions!

Of course i would of stopped him if he had attempted to do it again but he clearly was not going to. If i had super powers i would have gladly jumped between them in a nano second and taken the blow myself. This man had shod my horses for five years and never laid a finger on them so as i said it was very shocking. The farrier knew the score straight away and knew he would not be coming back. No words needed.

Ive got to agree with Tia too (which doesnt often happen eh Tia )*winks*

If anyone hurt my horse I would absolutely lose the plot. However right or wrong that person would quite possibly get a kick up the arse or worse.

Sorry, another one agreeing with Tia....there is not need for a blazing row or a rant...would just tell the farrier quite directly and firmly that his behaviour was unacceptable and not would use be using him again. Friendship would suffer but I wouldnt want a friend like that.

When i worked on a big yard we were last call, farriers a bit short and tired maybe.. i had three tied up on the yard ready. One was being an arse and the farrier proceeded to whack it a couple of times and he broke loose and then so did the other two. I went mental it was all so unnecessary and i then had to go and round them all up. It wasnt my horse but they were in my care and i was there to defend them. I then stood around while they finished off to keep an eye. I would go loopy if someone hurt my pony i couldnt keep my mouth shut for a second!!

fully agree with you Tia - my old Farrier done this to my pony (he had Lammi at the time) and as you can imagine its difficult for them to stand for very long on 3 legs!.. he reared up (ok not that high) and my farrier hit him with the rasp - well i went effing mad at him and reported him to the Farriers association and told him if he ever came near my pony again i would shove that rasp where the sun doesnt shine.
