What's the youngest age a child can compete in a 'fun' class at a local show? Could a 2yo ride in a fancy dress class? If not, could a 2yo walk at the side?

Thanks.

At the RC I used to be on the comittee for, all riders had to be between 3-70 because of the insurance. It probably varies from show to show, why dont you gicve the secretary a ring?

i actually had an incident whereby the riding club changed the rules.
it was a bonnie pony class - i was inhand with my shetland next to a coloured pony - one said coloured pony was a 2 year old - not holding on as mum gave her some mints to play with - hence was struggling to open them! mum was busy talking to person at other side of her and every now and then got some grass for her pony - it was a bigggg class and we were stood a long time. mum was tooooo busy nattering and pony wanted some more grass but was being ignored - result - pony bucks and jumps around - child sent flying...... still not end of story!.. child got back on and pony put back in line. again - the stupid woman was too busy talking, never told her daughter to hold on and it happened again - this time - as we were close in the lineup - my pony turned and threatened to kick - the 1st incident had upset mine and he saw the 2nd as maybe the pony was actually trying to go for him! this time thou, the child really did go with a thud! result - i was disqualified! my dad and a few other spectators went to complain as they had seen what had happened and they changed the rules re childs age at that point. didnt make me feel very good thou as i had unhorsey friends at that show watching me who didnt understand what had gone on. oooo - i should also add, the pony was only 4 - had scars on his legs already and from what i was told from someone stabled with them, was a nasty little thing. sooooooooooo, in conclusion, i think 2 is far too young but with my story it came down to INO a bad mum - who put a toddler on a young pony and couldnt be arsed even holding the pony as she wanted a gossip! i dare say thats a rare case but look at it on the other hand, even if your pony and child are good together, you keep control of it, what about the other ponies around - if one of them went to kick yours what would you do?

sorry for the long post i just feel strongly about ages after that incident!

I feel I have to say something , as I have said about taking my 2 yr old , We will have a leader for the pony ( the pony we are taking is an ex riding school pony and aged ) . I will be holding on to my child the whole time and then some .

Wouldnt blame the pony in that circumstance though, Its the parent that was at fault not picking or buying a more suitable pony for the 2 yr old ( thats if it was the 2 yr old childs pony) I wouldnt be buying a pony for my 2 yr old .

i dare say when i have children, i will want to go with shows with them - assuming they like ponies!!
but the case with my incident was horribble - how on earth the child wasnt seriously injured as the 2nd time, she really went flying and i mean landed maybe 4 metres or more infront of the pony and mum!!! i really do think it was the parents fault and they sold the pony shortly after - i really hope it was an isolated case. i now just agree with ages being for classes no matter what the class. mind you, there sould also maybe be a rule that handlers of ponies with small children on should actually pay attention and handle the pony!

btw - colleen, good luck at the show! will keep fingers crossed it doesnt rain!

Parents shouldnt have been standing chatting and not looking after the child full stop . Its not on , My eyes will not be off my child , he will do the little showing class and he will be taking straight off , and pony will be passed to my 6 yr old who can do the games .

Your right, that incident could have been alot worse. Stupid parents

thanks x
