What's this plant?

blackberries don't always have fruit as it doesn't bear fruit until 2 years old.
Just seems so familiar a plant, but can't name it! Sorry

I asked my OH to have a look as he is a bit of a forestry expert and although he knows it - it is on the tip of his tongue - he can't damn well remember. However we will get the book out of the truck tomorrow morning and I am sure he will find the answer!

Brilliant!

Look forward to you replying tomorrow (hmm.....make that today!)

Looks like Hazel to me, and our horses/ponies love it, they eat the young nuts, and not poisonous, but the nuts could cause colic if eaten in large quantities.

It is hazel. There are two different types. We have one in our field which has bigger leaves and we haven't seen any nuts on it but it does get cut back when the hedges are cut.
We cut branches down for the horses to munch on, they love it.
