Whats Tilden? What is the diff between synequin, newmarktet and Cos

I am very interested to know what Tilden is and whether it would help my horse. Is it the same as IRAP?

Also, what is the difference between Synequin, Newmarket powder and Cos something? (Cosequin?)

I want my horse to have the best treatment possible for his arthritis.

Tildren is a drug, given IV. It is a bisphosphonate derivative (if memory serves me correctly) and modifies the osteoblast and osteoclast function. Which in english means it affects bone remodelling. It's quite expensive (approx £500 a treatment) and in reality you may need to treat 6 monthly.

Synequin, Cosequin and Newmarket are all high grade joint suppliments. The difference between them will primarily be what marketing you believe and which one the vet supplies! Although saying that I think Newmarket is pure glucosamine whereas the other two have chondroitin and possibly other stuff too.
 
Ben & Jerrys - thank you so much! Are you a vet? You seem to know your osteoblasts and osteoclasts (I work in orthopaedics) Bisphosphonates are given for human osteoporosis too.

Would Tildren work for high/low ringbone, side bone and pedal osteitis?

No, not a vet! Have recently used it on my own horse so did a bit of research into it.

Certainly worth asking your own vet if it may be an option for your horse.

It's just given through a regular drip, so not directly into the area.
The main side effect is colic, but most vets are giving suitable drugs to prevent this alongside the tildren.
My horse has had it twice, both times he showed very mild symptoms, the first time he didn't pass droppings for hours and the second time he was just a bit restless.
Other people I know who have treated their horse have had to take them to the vets and leave them, my vet was happy to do it at home and leave me with a supply of finadyne.
A very rare side effect is cardiac complications from hypocalcemia, but the vet just monitors the heart throughout the administration to check.
 
My mare was given Tildren for spavin in December 07. As she was being treated at Dick vet they arranged that I brought her in so they could monitor her during and after the drip was in. She suffered no side effects although I was pre-warned that colic may be likely and a heart attck was a rare side effect. My bill was £285 for the Tildren although that was only for the drug itself not the time or consultation. It was Martin Weaver at R(D)SVS who treated my mare.
 
My late mare was given Tildren in 2005 for concussion in her hooves (before i got her) etc and it cost the previous owners over £600. i know when i spoke to my vet about it before i got the mare, he said it isnt actually licensed over here and they have to get it in from europe, this may have changed now though. Thankfully, my mare never had reoccuring symptoms, she sadly had to be PTS this year but due to something unrelated so it worked for approx 3 years and could have worked for longer for my mare.
 
One of my horses had 3 treatments with Tildren for kissing spine, my vets were trialling it for KS. The first time they kept him in the hospital for the afternoon to monitor him, but he had no side effects, and so the other 2 times he was sent home straight after but with some Finadyne just in case, but he didn't have any problems with it. Sadly it didn't work on his KS and he's now a happy hacker out on loan. As far as I can remember each treatment was £250 for the drugs with vet and hospital time on top.
 
Merlin has had Irap and Tildren twice.... the last treatment of Tildren was £600 inc call out and is about what you will have to pay.

Irap was more costly as it involves at least 4/5 call outs... one to take blood and the others for it to be reinjected!!!

Merlin has been sound since his treatments (starting 18m ago) and was treated for an arthritic fetlock and spavins.
 
Thanks good idea. Horse is going to have an appointment there and I can take things from there. Please have your fingers and toes crossed it is something straight forward like arthritis and not the C word!!!! x
