Whats with jodpur sizing?

I tried some jods on at Derby House and made a mental note that when I could afford some more, I would order them on line. Now I can't remember if they were a size 34 or 36 so I googled 'jodpur size 16' (which is what I am) and its coming back as 16 = size 31??!!! There is no way I would fit a size 31?

Going on that scale it would make me a size 20 in clothese??

I'm a 14 in trousers (unless very generous

) and wear a 28 in Pikeur, but in Derby House own brand I need a 30 as they come very small. I also find them far too shallow from waist band to crotch (maybe my backside fills all the space)
 
Been wearing joddy's all my life...still have no idea what is my correct size and still have to hold them up, suss em out a bit and then take 3 different sizes in the changing rooms!

If I'm a size 8 normally what size breeches would I need? Need to get some new ones before hunting starts. All my zips have gone and it got a bit breezy last season!!
 
I'm a 16 and in Derby house breeches I normally wear a 34". I like their breeches and have just ordered those check ones that are reduced right now and they are very smart.
 
I am a size 10/12 in trousers and most of my pairs of jodhs are 26" waist but they are pretty tight at that! I would say maybe 32/34 should fit you?

Have just ordered a size 10 pair of jodhs from robinsons, and it says "size 38/10" - no idea what is 38 on a size 10 pair of jodhs!! Anyone know?
 
A size 16 is 30" in jodphurs
10 is 24
12 is 26
14 is 28
16 is 30
18 is 32

The sizing can also depend on the stretch of the material.

I take a size 28 in moutain horse jods, but a 32 in dublin pull-ons.

A size 10 pair of jods is continental size 38 rather than the waist bein 38! A size 12 pair of jods is 40, a size 14 is 42, a size 16 is 44, a size 18 is 46 and a size 20 is 48... It's not related to the waist measurement but to the equivelant size on the continent.

I'm a size 4/6 in normal clothes and take a 24'' in jods? And I thought it was equivalent to use waist size in inches?
 
Apparently all my jodhs are sized small then, as I am def not a large 12 and as I said, 26" jodhs fit but are quite tight on me!

Yep I agree- I'm an average 12 I'd say and 28" are perfect. 26" too tight but I do like them to be "comfy". Just try em on.
 
Thanks for your help. As a size 16 there is no way I would fit in a waist size 30 though. I am more like a 34-36 I'm sure?
 
Lol this is why I haven't bought a new pair for ages, and am down to just one pair that are both comfy and still in full working order!!!

I hate it because tack shops never have a full range so you look through find a style you like then find they only have a teeny tiny size in stock. The sizing is generally impossible. I orderd two pairs of size 12 jodhs and sent them both back one pair too big the other too small!!

You can't even rely upon just getting exactly the same as last time because they are always changing the styles......

Then there are problems with the height from crotch to waist, the width of the legs, stretchiness and length.

Bl**dy impossible.
 
I also find most tack shops only seem to have a very small selection of thick bulky jodhs - urgh! I like mine as thin as possible, specially in summer!
 
Its a minefield out there. I used to be a comfy 10 and took a 26" in jods. I put on a bit of winter warmth and grew to a 10-12 and now usually take a 28" in pikeur. I recently ordered a pair of kentucky breeches and ripped the tags of them, turns out they are too big around my thighs and are sitting doing nothing until I get them on ebay.

From now on Im going to stick with Pikeur breeches as I know they fit me and I find them really comfy, saying that my friend has a load of top named breeches for £50 so I might be persuaded.

Trial and error - all my jods are widely differing sizes. ironically the best fit are a pair I got at a car boot sale and bought without trying on...
