My pony has been sound no problems , he is shod fronts only and lost one of his shoes last thursday when being ridden. Unfortunately we couldnt find shoe and after speaking to farrier he said continue working/ turn out as normal and he is due this wednesday to re shoe.

however, today when i went to get him in from field he was holding his front leg up that has .lost shoe & very lame on that foot.

He has a chunk out of him that side so other pony might have chased him off - any ideas PLEASE /????

If he is so lame he is holding up a front leg he needs looking at asap. Vet or farrier. I would have had him seen tonight, but if not tomorrow. In the meantime he needs to be in on a deep bed until you have him looked at.

Could be caused by anything. Could be abcess, laminitus....

If he has good strong feet I would turn out with 1 shoe, but I wouldn't ride.

Sounds like an abscess. The vet will need to investigate ASAP, as it is excruciatingly painful for them. If it is an abscess, once the vet releases the pressure by opening up a channel for the puss to escape, you horse will experience immediate relief. If you leave it, the puss will force itself up the leg as it can't burst out of hoof wall by itself. You do not want this to happen, as you will encounter all kinds of nasty complications then. Vet ASAP I’m afraid.

Thanks for your replies, was in touch with farrier yesterday who farrier came today and treating as abcess so fingers crossed

Non-weight bearing lamenesses need to be seen immediately by a vet, really... :o

Thank you , i would have called vet if he wasn't weight bearing today but he was a lot more comfortable and can walk around his stable. My farrier works closely with my vet & i trust his judgement, obviously if the situation deteriates the vet will be called straight away.

If my horse wasn't weight bearing after five minutes I'd call the vet never mind the next day!! Really, some things can't wait and a horse being non weight bearing is one of them.
