Have you ever gone to see your much loved horse and they just stand there looking glooming, a bit depressed and sad?

My 10 year old mare, who is quite marish anyway, has been moodier than EVER! I've noticed she's drinking a lot more water, but i've put this down to being hot as she's not clipped yet and she's had an increase in hay and field isn't overly green anymore :( she's on 24/7 turn out with a lightweight rug on.

When i took her showjumping couple of weeks ago she was fine warming up but wouldn't even jump the first jump...which is not like her at all....she's usually the sidewards, nostril flaring 'let me at them' type!! Before when she hasn't wanted to jump, it's been her way of telling me something is wrong......she was fine in warm up but had no interest at all in the ring! Hacking out she has lost her energy, even though she was never the most energetic towards hacking. She just seems gloomy!! She felt very slightly lame in her back leg in trot but she can feel a bit like that when there is no energy in her trot!

I've let her have a couple of weeks off to give her a rest and after riding her sunday, she's still the same!! :(

She has been more protective over food than usual but its not like she's starved there is enough grass and they have two massive wedges of hay every day between two. She isn't on any hard feed. Might get bloods done because i can't see her looking sad anymore! Anyone know how much this costs and how good are they?

Is anyone elses horse like this? Lack of vitamins? Seasons?

Argh!!!

Thanks all in advance!!

What have you been feeding her on ?
What supplements has she been given ?
Have you changed anything recently ?

Was she wearing the lightweight rug in the warm weather we have had ?

suggest you look up cushings symptoms as sounds like it may be ,even though she is only 10....might be worth asking your vet to check for cushings when they take bloods...some of the symptoms i know ......
difficulty regulating temp,
long coat,
overeating,
depression,
lethargy

sounds similar to your horse....

I too have a 10 year old mare who is just not herself. She is very lethargic and generally uninterested in life. I don't think she drinking anymore than normal and shes not weeing more frequently or more volume. She not particularlymareish and I wouldn't say she's any different in that respect. She is however really fat. I have been trying unsuccessfully to shed this weight over the summer. She's fed 1.5% of her body weight in hay and i've just recently started giving her Baileys low cal balancer as I'm worried she's not getting enough nutrients. She's exercised at least 6 times a week, but recently she's become even more unwilling to work (she's very lazy by nature). She has also appeared a little stiff but again not sure if she's just not working forward enough. Anyways I'm worried enough to get the vet this morning who took bloods for metabolic syndrome and also cushings as well as the usual blood tests. Not sure of their costs as yet. My mare lives for her food, so as I had to fast her overnight for the bloods I thought she was going to be really angry by the time the vet came at 8:30 (especially as the other horses had all had their breakfasts/nets) but she wasn't, she just stood there
looking so sad - she's definitely not right - she'd have had the door down normally!! When the blood results come back - hopefully this next week - I'll let you know our outcome.
Horses eh? They're such a worry!!
