As in title. My mare's feet have suffered from neglect and have a few chips and cracks. My farrier has said it's superficial and will grow out. So I'm looking for a dressing that will make the horn supple and promote growth.

So what would/do you use?

NAF hoof moist.. it is water based and so will not stop the natural osmosis of the hoof.

Kevin Bacon hoof dressing with Laurel is good, but shouldnt really be used everyday as it is oil based!

I have a few that I will use from time to time-The Right Step hoof dressing is fab for dry chipped feet, as is Farnam hoof saver- its a cream that comes in a huge pump bottle, its £20, although it last for ages.

Cornucrescine rubbed into the coronet band may help too.

For shows I like the old fashioned Carr Day Martin hoof oil in a red tin or Effol green hoof grease although obv not so good for their feet, but ok for v occasional use I suppose.

NAF Hoof Moist is also very good and although I've not tried it out yet, the Kevin Bacon products always seem to get a very good review on here so probably very good.

Kevin Bacon is the only one my farrier will recommend. I use the black Effol for competitions

Kevin Bacon is good, farrier recommended (our farrier is God too). Used it last summer and not this winter and hooves seem ok. They had a tendency to crack in summer.

Available from most tack shops I would have thought.

Another vote for kevin bacon. Seemed to repel water in the winter and keep hooves from cracking in the summer.

Kevin Bacon here too highy recommended/sworn by from my farrier

most tack shops sell it, the original stuff looks like lard and is in a red pot with gold riding you can get it from the Barn Shop most definitely

Nothing! I only ever use effax hoof balsam for competitions but other than that i never put anything on my horses feet. I have owned all sorts of horses for more than 20 years and ive never had a problem with any of their feet. I currently own 5 TBs and they are all fine, very rarely lose a shoe. But i never wait until shoes are loose before they are done, they are shod regularly to maintain balance. They are also on a high fibre diet.

I firmly believe problems come due to upsetting the moisture balance by using oils and management routines, also insufficient farriery and inappropriate diets, etc.
