Hi, just wondered what all of you HHO favourite horse saying/quote is??

Mine most definitely has to be:
"...and I whispered to the horse: trust no man in whose eye you don't see yourself reflected as an equal." - Don Vincenzo Giobbe (circa 1700)

and

We have almost forgotten how strange a thing it is that so huge and powerful and intelligent an animal as a horse should allow another, and far more feeble animal, to ride upon it's back." ~ Peter Gray

Just this:

"Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient."

~Ronald Duncan, "The Horse," 1954

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. ~Winston Churchill

In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. Eleven-hundred pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs - it's something you just can't get from a pet hamster. ~Author Unknown

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
friendship without envy, or beauty without vanity?
Here where grace is laced with muscle and strength by gentleness confined.
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent;
there is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
England's past has been borne on his back.
All our history is in his industry.
We are his heirs;
He is our inheritance
Ladies and Gentlemen - The Horse!

~Ronald Duncan

And my favourite........

Look back at our struggle for freedom,
Trace our present day's strength to it's source;
And you'll find that man's pathway to glory
Is strewn with the bones of the horse.

Someone has posted a poem on here before about dealing with the loss of their horse, thats lovely, would like to read it again xxx

"You are a great champion. When you ran, the ground shook, the sky opened and mere mortals parted. Parted the way to victory, where you'll meet me in the winner's circle, where I'll put a blanket of flowers on your back"

from the film 'Dreamer' :D

the one in my siggy, which you like! that one fills me with awe every time I remember to read it. :) :) :)
other than that, I have LOADS, wish I could have them all in my siggy!
"Violence begins where knowledge ends" (Abraham Lincoln). this is SO applicable imho, esp when it comes to violence done with gadgets etc. :( :( :(
"Ride as if you are competing, every day. At competitions, ride as if you are at home."
"Remember, the horse has no bad intentions, he only reacts." (Dr Gerd Heuschmann). I think this one needs sticking in neon lights above every menage!
and
"The horse's mouth is sacred and a gift to be earned." Ditto...
There's a really great one too, basically that good horsemanship is saying to the horse "I'm okay and you're okay", I think this is from a William Micklem article, makes perfect sense to me.

''Gypsy Gold does not chink and glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark'' Clannagh Gypsies I think that was?

''A horse is a thing of beauty... none will tire of looking at him as long as he displays himself in his splendor.' Xenophon

''A horse is the projection of peoples' dreams about themselves - strong, powerful, beautiful - and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence.
'' Pam Brown

'A woman needs two types of animals in life - The horses of her dreams and a Jackass to pay for them all!''

Somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.
~Stanley Harrison

Maybe not my favourite and a bit rude but I did find it funny when I was sent it:

Don't cry for the horses that life has set free.
A million white horses forever to be.
Don't cry for the horses now in God's hand.
As they dance and they prance in a heavenly band.
They were ours as a gift, but never to keep.
As they close their eyes forever to sleep.
Their spirits unbound. On silver wings they fly.
A million white horses against the blue sky.
Look up into heaven, you'll see them above.
The horses we lost, the horses we loved.
Manes and tails flowing, they gallop through time.
They were never yours, they were never mine.
Don't cry for the horses. They'll be back someday.
When our time is gone, they will show us the way.
Do you hear that soft nicker? Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses. Love the ones that are here. ~Author Unknown~

& the one thing we should all remember our horses give us so much.....

'The wind of heaven is that which blows between the horses ears' Arabian Proverb

and the one in my signature: 'Rosettes are won at home and collected at shows' because it's very true! :)

Horses for courses!!! Love it

Woman have Horses because there are so few good men around!!!!! Sooo true

It is care, not expensive stables that make a good horse!!! Mine are field kept and I think I have some really kind horses and if I half knew what I was doing I would have a really good horse :D

There are fools, damn fools, and those who remount in a steeplechase. This one although nto really horsey reminds me of my old boy I came off him four times when I first rode him lol He kinda got the idea I wasnt giving up and then we went on to have some real fun!!

Oh I love that film x

I came across this poem a while ago

I see that every day he has fresh water and good hay
Shelter from cold and wind and rain
And the ration he needs daily of grain
I’ll see to his need for play and exercise
And love him, for that is the bind that ties
I’ll teach him and I promise to learn
His trust in me I’ll take time to earn

He’ll not be just a toy I can afford
That I forget except to pay board.
I’ll see to his needs day in and day out
Not leaving him in his stall to sulk and pout

I know that I own him but he owns me too.
I’m responsible to keep him happy and healthy
He is not a burden but a lifelong friend
Not one I’ll abandon when his life nears its end

It was my choice not his to have a horse
From that choice his life should be better not worse
I’ll not ship him off when he’s too old to ride
Finding excuses and reasons behind which to hide

Like marriage it was meant to last not end in divorce
For divorce often means death for the horse
It is more like a child, the purchase a birth
A being to care for, a life that has worth

I acknowledge this commitment with honour and pride
I’ll care for this horse he’s not just something to ride
If the day ever comes when my promise I can’t fulfil
I’ll see he is placed with someone who will.

Endurance riders do it all day long ~ unknown

Agri's may do it in wellies, but equestrians do it in leather boots with a whip (a college quip)

And my second favourite, as my favourite has already been posted:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together, never to be separated again.

:)

When I told my dad who (used to break horses to harness with his uncle when he was young) I was buying my first horse his quote was :-

"What on earth for they bite at the front, they kick at the back and try to kill you in the middle get yourself a ferret you will never go hungry with a ferret"

Over the years I have been bitten, kicked and occasionally one has tried to kill me in the middle, but I would not be without them.

these are all so lovely, but please stop making me want to cry! I'm at work for FFFFs sake!

Ones from my instructor. She's brilliant and says so many things that have made it into my family's repetoire for so many things!
"he shouldn't blink unless you tell him to" - for dealing with naughty horses!
"and you let him!" - he blinked and I didn't tell him to! :)
"rider error, not horse error, it's always rider error"
"I'm right aren't I" - her normal response when she's put her finger on the cause of the problem you've been having and fixed it in one fell swoop! makes me laugh every time I hear it, because she usually is!
