.... I was watching a couple of people ride the other day and am very jealous(!) of their positions.... heels down, leg doesn't move at all in all paces, gets the horse going forward with same leg position. I just don't know how they do it!! My heel tends to ride upwards a tad when i sqeeze horse forwards, when in rising trot my leg moves a little - outwards normally - same in canter.

I asked one of them and they said it takes a lot of hard work to build up the correct leg muscles to sqeeze with all of the leg rather than just the ankle.

What's your positions like?

Terrible, but a MILLION times better than it was! My fantastic instructor took the time to correct my seat - that, in turn, corrected most of my leg position faults. I have lessons on her mechanical horse as often as I can afford (got one tomorrow) as it helps tremendously!

I still think I look like I'm sat on my office chair at work, though...

Mine is rubbish, Legs back, toes pointing out and down. Been having lessons for over a year and getting better, though instructors say me mare don't help as she is really not forward going so I have got my leg in this position to give her a good kick and its become habit.
Working on it and it is getting better.

oh gosh totally know what you mean JD - I am the same. returning to riding after a break and accidents and asked my instructor to take me right back to basics to re-establish core muscles for balance and train correct muscles to work so I am in the correct position. Even after only 2 lessons my mare is moving forward much more actively and though I have a very long way to go I am starting to feel like a rider again rather than just a lump sat on top!! Little and often riding is also upping my stamina which of course helps me sustain position and drive horse forward more effectively. Good luck, we will get there eventually one hopes!!!

Which version of leg position? Normal riding, Shetland riding or Racehorse riding? In fact scrap that - all are shocking :D Lol! I sit in a hunting seat for the most part but when jocking up and galloping my legs go back under me and I lean on my knees.

So yeah, Naff!

Better on my own horse than on others strangely especally when jumping. Even though my horse is far harder work in to a fence than the last horse I jumped I think it's because I feel secure on him for some strange reason as he is far more likely to to stop or go round the side.

Started to have lessons and a friend of mine recorded the lesson, I was horrified when I saw the playback, but have to say only the other day my instructor said leg was now really good, say leg as only have the one lol the other one does its own thing !! ~)

My legs flap about too much!! Keeping my heels down isn't a problem but keeping my legs still is!! Have just bought some symmetry straps to try and help me get the feel for keeping them still. Not sure if that will work or not though! Im fine if I ride stirrup-less, its just when I ride with stirrups (so all the time then!).

I'm guilty of having mine too far back in the "canter ON" position (despite what I'm actually asking for). Dunno when that started - it's a newish thing!

It's about the only thing I get right :eek::D. The rest goes to pot on a regular basis :cool:

I do a position check every few minutes, especially if a manouver or transition didn't go to plan; seeing if it's me doing someting wrong.

Same, I seem to have always had a decent leg position, however I have a deamonic left hand and I collaps to the left they are my main issues :D

Depends on few things, if I’m jumping and I jump how I like to jump….it’s not good, need to keep my legs more on the girth and fold more at the hips, having said that it’s never let me down and I’m pretty good at sticking on, so I’m guess I’m doing something right, I’ve been told I’ve got a good lower leg but it depends what I’m riding and in what saddle (pathetic excuses I know) for example I tried a different saddle the other week and I couldn’t ride for toffee in it, felt terrible, my legs felt all over the shop, rode in two others, back in business (at least it felt ok lol) but I don’t have regular lessons so there could actually be a million and one things wrong with my legs, arms, hands….:o

I think mine is much better bareback :o

It's not as good as I would like but riding bareback is certainly helping, hopefully
