Whats ' your yard like?

My yard is great. One or two irritating personalities (ok, actually just one - a dressage princess who believes she shouldn't have to slum it with the eventers/showjumpers!) but everyone else is fab.

the facilities are a bit rough and ready but all the horses are really happy, there is plenty of summer grazing and I have lots and lots of really good friends down there. The bitchiness is at an all time low at the moment and all us staff get on really well with each other which makes for a really pleasant atmosphere.

The mare and I are on a big livery yard (50 horses). It used to be a racing yard and is beautiful, with wonderful facilities (huuuuuge indoor and heated clubhouse overlooking it, bigger outdoor with all-weather surface, collecting ring, xc course, amazing off-road hacking etc). The mare has a massive stable in an American-style barn and shares a paddock with 3 other mares. We all turn out and bring in each others' horses so no-one is out alone. There is a bit of biatching, but it is usually from the types who 'talk a good ride' but never actually get out there and do it themselves so no-one takes any notice.
We kept our horses at my dad's place in Johannesburg before I moved to the UK. It was very nice - 10 acres for 2 horses in retirement, my dad built them stables in the field so they could come and go as they pleased. They also had lots of shelter and a sand pit for rolling in! They lived the life of Riley, but I found it quite lonely.
I like being on a livery yard - always someone around to have a chat and a laugh with, and if something is up with the mare there are always helping hands and offers of rides.
Gosh, sorry, that's quite a long post!

I keep mine at home, we have 22 stables of assorded sizes, and indoor school, outdoor lunge/round pen, 2,500 acres for the horses and lots of hacking round all the fields with no roadwork round the rest of the estate. We have three liveries who are all really nice and generally we won't tolerate any bitchyness or bad feeling on the yard we only do livery by invitation only so we can pick and choose who has their horses on the yard.

Downside to this is I don't have a life and any waking hour that I'm not working in the office I spend sorting out the horses :-(
