Has anyone come across this before?

I was chatting to someone I met today and he described a pony that was very reluctant to go forwards but improved tremendously when they removed all wheat from his diet. Has anyone tried this and if yes, what do you feed?

We had a mare who was intolerant/allergic to all cereals. Fortunately she was fine with alfalfa and unmollassed sugar beet. I would try those, but if the pony is a poor dooer, you may find that this improves when you have elliminated wheat from his diet.

Its unsual. Wheat is the seed which is used to make bread.

I would feed chaff, sugarbeet and straights such as maize if this was needed, along with a GP supplement.

My horse is allergic to Alfalfa, sugar, garlic and has to have a low protein diet due to kidney problems.

Thank you both very much.

The person I was chatting to is now feeding Alfa-A Oil, sugarbeat and oats. I've swapped mine to Alfa-A (no need sure I want to try the oats just yet!) to see what happens!

Just be careful with Alfa-a original because it is mollassed, which causes a problem in some horses. Intolerance /sensitivity to one substance can make the individual less tolerant of other substances so other common foodstuffs might not be suitable feed either. It really is trial and error, I had a mare who could not eat any grain or mollasses and who suffered terrible withdrawal symptoms just like a junkie going cold turkey when we removed them from her diet, if I was doing it again I would make the withdrawal period longer and more gradual

my WB mare has an intolerance to wheat found on blood tests.
i looked through all supplements/feeds and a lot have some kind of wheat product in them, so she is now on simple systems grass nuts.
