Not to be outdone by his dinky partner in crime, CS thoroughly polished his halo today :)

continuing the "keep his back warm" theme from Arena UK, he travelled in a fleece but when we arrived we piled a magnet pad and HW stable rug folded, over his quarters, and warmed up in a quarter sheet despite it being a bit muggy........and for whatever reason, this does seem to be making a huge difference.

He warmed up for AM92 very sweetly, trot perhaps not as nice as at Witham in the heat, but far far better than Arena last week, so moving in the right direction at least..........did a very neat test, no blips or even nearly blips and i felt like i really rode the canter work, half halted each time i should have, pushed him uphill through the corners etc and actually corrected him when he wasnt 100% on the aids (it would appear the trot is not only his weak point but mine too  ).

quick break, jacket swap, repatriation with test and back in for A102 aaaaaaaaaaaaand......i 90% rode the trot too! thank christ im finally learning how to ride!!! felt loads and loads better, so so nearly actually taking a pull!!!
canter felt fab, working piris not as good as they can be but hey ho, first time in the ring, tempis felt super confident (from both of us, i counted well and he never hesitated) and the only blooper was our final halt which was crooked in every direction lol!

loads of pats, grapes and jelly babies for the pony (which ive since discovered will test if he gets dope tested, so no more of those  ) and went to get sheets.........over the moon to discovered we were 1st overall in AM92 (out of 6, 2nd was on 64%) with 67.3% and 1st out of 2 in A102 with 65% (2nd on 60%) so good solid scores.

This does leave me a small dilemma as had really given up on regionals this year as one thing after another (my back, his stomach) and it wasnt looking likely, but now i only need 1 more point!!!! Typically the only show i can get to is sat (summer qual end on sun) and is miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiles away..................but i think if i dont go, and dont give it a shot, ill kick myself??????

whatever i decide, im thrilled to bits with him, he was on side, concentrating and trying and i feel like the trot is coming togther in a more solid way, less moments of brilliance currently, but also less explosions, its steadily getting more consistant and expressive together in small steps :)

am intending to source a small, quiet venue for a PSG relatively soon and start on the AF PSG sheet mission.

Oooh you and your sister are on fire at the moment! Congrats, those are great scores :). It would be fab for you if you have found the key with keeping his back warm. I wonder if he holds some old muscle overstretch or something there from being broken so young and raced? It might just take the muscles being warmed up to help him relax.
Anyway just musings! Well done, you two are such stars, he is so exciting :).

Careful mentioning jelly babies on here then, if you're not careful one of your fans will report you! :-D

Looking good, glad the keeping warm suggestion seems to be working, fingers crossed it continues!

If I were you I'd be going after that last point....

A definite improvement well done. :)

As a random thought stemming from a friend's horse is it possible that the coldbackness could be linked potentially to minor kissing spines. As we know it comes in all different levels and a minor case could explain a number if not all of his 'symptoms' from exploding out the blue in tests to the seemingly high stomach acid to needing a warm back before wanting to work at his best. It is a total stab in the dark and IF it was the case it can be completely manageable if low grade, didn't know if you had considered it before but seeing as predominately it is found in TBs thought it would be worth a mention :)

Well done.

Try for the point ;)

Re the warming of his back; try a hotwater bottle, in a cover , laid over his loins (and/or where ever else he gets tight) before starting your ridden warm up. Not sure how practical it is when travelling away (thermos?) but it can really make a difference and help warm the muscle before stretching and working them.

Well done :D He looks fab, really flying in those extended trot pictures! Good luck for getting your last regionals point :)

Or microwaveable lavendar bag (for added calmness?) :p Could ask if they'd microwave it at the show ground cafe for you! Haha, can imagine the faces.

If you're just starting to learn to ride I might as well give up now! Maybe you'd like a grey ex-racer to add to your yard?!

CS is looking lovely & they are great scores/results. Well done!! If I were you & it's not too much hassle, I'd be going to try for that extra point. If you'd decided not to bother with the regionals it'll be no different if you don't get it but a bonus if you do.

Good luck if you do go on Saturday.

Ooooh I have to say they are lovely!! I don't believe in herbal stuff generally but I have a hot water bottle beany thing that you put in the micro and it smells of lavender - it's amazing!! :D

Not sure if he gets turnout or not but I've got one who is absolutely horrid to ride if she hasn't been out for about an hour first.
I think she gets tight in her back muscles overnight and needs that field time to walk about and stretch them out (if i had a walker she'd be on there before riding) otherwise she is so short strided and bucks to high heaven when you try and send her forward.
She also benefits from shortening and lengthening work in walk and trot before cantering.
Just wondering if CS would be similar in need a good stretch and the heat you're providing is a quicker fix at shows as its really warming his muscles up as a replcement for the stretching?

thanks all, will be ringing to see if i can get a late entry ay 9am :)

he does always go out for a bit before a show, unless we are leaving before 7am! but it doesnt make any diff on the days we have left early and thus not turned out, back/forward/lack of is exactly the same.

good idea re hot water bottle, can fill up on yard just before we leave and will still be nice and warm, very clever thinking!

am thinking EPSM (mild) rather than kissing spines. The exploding has all but gone now (1 rear in 1.5months and 1 kung fu kick), so me/NMT/vet/chiro are now wondering if the ulcers are a secondary thing to low grade pain associated with mild EPSM. He's on the diet now, and foot lady noticed a big diff when picking up/moving hind legs, to trim, so fingers crossed oil and warmth is the key to managing this. His symptoms more fit EPSM than KS so will rock with that for now and see how he goes on the diet, he feels looser even at home in the initial 10mins, so fingers crossed.

Great scores well done! And glad you are finding what makes things better too, it's so frustrating when things go intermittently wrong and you don't know why. If only they could talk eh?

Fantastic result. Very well done. I think that you should go for the point as well! The last photo is superb. He's a real credit to you and what can be achieved with good training.

Just wondering, what make are your pads? Is the sheepskin Mattes? I have some shopping to do and like the look for yours.

He looks amazing! Good luck obtaining that final point! Looking forward to saturday evenings report telling us you are off to the regionals!!

Deffo go for the extra point - you'll regret it if you don't! He's looking good in the pictures, seems like following up on the EPSM theory is taking you in the right direction, so fingers crossed that's it. He's looking lovely in the photos in any case.

This paranoid owner is now going to look up EPSM and convince herself that one or both of her horses have it :D
