Hi -
Does anyone know of someone who offers a whelping service or someone who will come and stay with our bitch when she is due for whelping and we can[t be guaranteed to be around? Stressing out a little...

We're in the Newbury/Wantage area.

Thank you!

I can only suggest you see if your vet can recommend someone but don't think its likely. Not really fair on your bitch to be with a stranger either tbh, did you have her breeder or anyone advising you before you mated her, perhaps they could help.

Your bitch will be better off with someone she is familiar with for whelping. Someone she has a close bond with who knows numbers of vets/local trusted breeders/has read the book of the bitch so has an idea of what to expect and warning signs of issues would be better for her in some ways than a complete stranger to her who is adept at watching dogs whelp as she will be more at ease with them.IMO.

Is there a reason you definitely wont be around?
What breed?

Thank you.

She is a springer spaniel. We can't be housebound for the entire period, so just wanted to have someone to be able to help us so that she has someone with her in the unlikely event that she whelps when we are not there. Of course, will be asking the suitable people that we (including the bitch) know, just thought it's be wise to have a back-up should we need one.

Was this a planned mating, if so at the risk of being harsh you perhaps should have thought of this before. You don't have to be housebound for the entire period, just be aware of the signs of impending whelping and then be prepared to be with her for the whelping period and at least 24 hours after. As long as everything is going well you can then leave her for short periods. The Book of the Bitch mentioned by Aru is excellent and I would recommend you get a copy, it should help you get prepared and ensure you have a good chance of everything going well. There are quite a few people on here who will be able to offer advice but I am afraid you are going to have to commit some time to her.

Can you take it in turns to be with her near her whelping time and for a couple of days after. I had to work the day my bitch whelped, my mum was with her and phoned as soon as she'd had the 1st and I managed to come home while she whelped the rest (not that she needed help), then went back to work after (all pups born within 2 hours) and left my mum with them again. My bitch was such a good mum, she didn't need any help, but I wouldn't have considered leaving her on her own or with a stranger. I was taking her temperature for about a week before her due date and the temperature drop was pretty obvious and she whelped 24 hours later, also, she was nesting the night before, was sick after eating (the only time the whole pregnancy), so again really clear signs she was in 1st stage labour and would have them in the next couple of days.

It was a planned mating, and in fact it's ideal timing as I will be studying at that point, and so will be at home pretty much all of the time. I just want to be prepared with a backup helper should I have to rush off for any reason, that's all. Life is not always so predictable...

Ah right, your opening post asking about a whelping service didn't read like that. I would try and get a member of the family on stand by for that worst case scenario, but really I would try your level best to be there. And I do recommend Book of the Bitch, it is the breeders bible, you can get it on Amazon.
