However as it is a legal requirement to return the passport to the issuing PIO so that they can notify NED of the death, PIOs do generally try to accede to the owners wishes if they ask for it back as they know does have major sentimental value to many owners.

I got mine back mine was with Farmkey though...they just stamped it 'Deceased' on every page.

I've had them back with DECEASED stamped all over. Which is fine, but kinda makes me just give them a phone call these days and say sorry can't find the passport, goodbye.

The PIO has to stamp the passport cancelled and as I PIO I am happy to return to owner if asked to do so. Horses that go for human consumption have the passports sent to the PIO and in those cases you would need to ask them to send it back
