When are you clipping and what clip?

Just curious really. I am gonna try to wash my horse tomorrow and persuade the yard owner to do it sometime during the week. He sweats a lot now during work and he was completely covered in sweat after one short canter up the field on Thursday which considering he is fairly fit does kind of suggest he needs it done soon. He has gotten quite hairy quite fast.

For the actual clip I think everything will come off and leave the legs. I am going to be keeping him working over winter and get him and me fitter so think all of it is best but not legs as he will need that.

It depends on so many things, my horses are in overnight in winter, have a good selection of rugs and I'm around most days so if needed I can change rugs. My stables are quite warm. Mr B is clipped out apart from a saddle patch and legs but he's generally ridden in the morning, works quite hard and gets quite sweaty if not clipped, I can then rug up and turn out. The old TB with cushings can get hot easily, so he has a bib clip and is lightly rugged. I'd generally remove as little as possible for the work the horse is doing but I prefer them to be a bit cold rather than too warm.

why don't you just do a blanket or a trace clip now and then if Need more off on the next Clip do a hunter clip.

I'd always leave the legs on unless I had a show cob!

I take everything off bar the legs on my arabs and everything off the pony. They all live out. I find that people underestimate how hot they get under the coat, and have clipped a lot of horses for people recently who say the horse isn't getting that hot, yet it has heat rash when you look closely.

I give a full clip all year round on one of mine.

Leaving the legs on, definitely.

I do a full clip because it looks smarter, and more comfortable for my horse that is sweaty.

However I am at home 95% of the time and can change rugs when necessary and however many times a day that is nedded - just something to consider.

ID mare gets a hunter clip as her coat is horrendously thick, TB mare with none, or blanket clip depending on her workload, and child's pony has a bib clip...

Pony done already, horse will hopefully hold on until start of Nov. .

I'll clip when he starts sweating regularly. At the moment I'm undecided between a chaser & a blanket, I love a hunter clip but realistically I just don't think he's going to need that.

I'm doing a high trace asap! He's a particularly hairy cob and really needs doing as he's sweating every ride now.
I think I've been putting it off as he's out 24/7 rugless currently and clipping and rugging means admitting summer is over!

Full clip (leaving saddle patch) being done next week. She's getting so hot and sweaty just now. Will also take off legs, but she has really thick and course feathers so gets itchy (they are kept clipped year round).
It does mean rugs and admitting that summer is over though...

I do the same with my Arabs they never seem to feel the cold and over heat very easily I don't very often use neck rugs either, I have only clipped one of mine at the moment he has a much thicker coat than the other one and was getting very hot when ridden.

That is what I am hating admitting. Will be taking over some of the rugs that have fill in them and hoping he won't remove them once clipped or he is gonna freeze. Hopefully he will learn from it if he does and won't do it again but I have little hope for him learning such a thing.

It's also the fun of finding out can we clip him? He wouldn't allow it last year unless sedated but the YO wants to try without. We shall see how it goes!

When I get back from hols, so week after next. Hunter clip...I blanket clipped him last winter but he didn't need the extra warmth. He's been furring up for at least a month but I didn't want to do it before going away as they're happy out unrugged atm.

My TB is already clipped out completely, legs included. Only had him a week and that's how he came!
Daughters horse will be clipped out completely, probably also including legs for opening meet which I think us in a few weeks. He becomes a feathery mess in winter so he will be kept clipped out.
My horse I'll probably allow his legs to grow back personally but keep him clipped as he does sweat a lot.

All done now except one I'll do him this week .
One is chaser clipped but with the whole neck off
The others fully clipped out except half the heads because they are living out.

Mine will be clipped within the next couple of weeks as he is very fluffy! He will be having a full clip (including legs off) because otherwise his fur just gets too thick and he gets super sweaty whenever I ride.

Pony has a full neck chaser with full head off already - done a couple of weeks ago now. WB had hers all off bar legs this week. Both getting sweaty in work and it was hindering the training sessions as we'd have to stop sooner. Much better now. After pony's event this Saturday he'll have the rest taken off as he's getting a thick coat.

WB is rugged up with neck and I've started rugging pony with neck as well as he was starting to fuzz up a bit after the last cold snap. May get accused of overrugging but the WB gets chilly easily, the pony runs warm but isn't sweaty at all under the rug so I'll keep an eye on it. May take the under rug off if he's a bit warm. The racehorses have all been hunter clipped and they are in some extra thick rugs or about 5 layers of sheets and lightweights! There's a SJ horse owned by a friend that looks like it is twice the size it's in such a thick duvet rug collection but he runs very cold and needs rugging all year round else he starts shivering and dropping weight!

I always leave legs on but don't leave a saddle patch and only did a chase with full head/neck because I had no idea how pony would react to being clipped and would rather have not had an explosive well muscled D under me! Turns out he couldn't give a monkeys so the rest is coming off post event.

Sorry to jump in, but I have a possibly quite stupid question (so please be kind). Why leave legs on, is it for warmth or something else?

Only a bib or Irish clip in about 2 weeks time. I only get him clipped once a winter, he's in light work as 20, he always has a lovely winter coat but gets too sweaty behind front legs and around girth after exercise. Rarely gets anything more than a lightweight turnout on though as even though we are having milder winters the winter fields are exposed. In at night and out during day, end Oct to end April. I love his coat though so this year I'm wavering about a clip at all.

Full clip (leaving legs on, he lives out full time), in the next week or two. Would have been done weeks ago but I was out of the saddle so there was no point, and I don't want something super ticklish while I'm getting my fitness back. He's normally done for the first time by mid-September at the latest, as he's a warm boy with a thick coat (native).

My Hunter will be having a full clip except legs a week on Tuesday once I've booked the sedation ready for Opening Meet and my ISH who is in steady work over the winter after a busy summer season will have a blanket clip beginning/mid November.

I was going to wait until YO moves us onto winter turnout to give my hairy boy a full clip, but he got very sweaty just going for a slow plod up the lane today so thinking I might do it in the next week. Will be doing a full clip and leaving legs on unless he gets mud fever in which case i'll take his legs off too.

I clip because my pony with allergies gets crazy itchy in a winter coat and clipping allows the air to get to any damaged patches of skin and they can be treated

Having said that I take off all hair down to knees and hocks and blend those in as I cannot stand clip lines, it's more hair off than he needs but I just can't deal with traces/blanket clips etc
