As above really.

Friend said she would like to turn out when the clocks change next weekend. As there is only hers and my horse on yard she would like me to turn mine out also. I am terrible and have never turned out till it is warmish at night etc!! I'm a bit of a worrier!! The grass is coming through well and he will still be fed, he is hardly a shrinking violet!!

My boy was out about 3 weeks ago. Though that was due to my injury :? But hes a very skinny pathetic type and has been in a duvet with a MW on top to help him!! They get hay at night too :)

Though i have to say..according to the weather man, freezing nights are over so i would think he would be fine out from next weekend!!! :)

Hello summer and no mucking out :)

:) I should think your horse is absolutely itching to get out at night by now. Unless the weather is foul and there's no shelter (rainsheet?) then he'll be just fine, stop worrying, bung him out and enjoy not having to muck out.:)

I make mine live out all the time, most blankets came off weeks ago now and it is still below zero at night.

Mine is already out 24/7 but she's been out all winter. I think the stabled liveries on the yard will be allowed overnight turnout from May, which seems a little late for me. I would say turnout from next weekend should be fine for any horse, if you are worried about the cold you could always pop a rug on him at night.

Have to say I'm really looking forward to no mucking out!! He has just recovered from an injury and I have been worse about him since that!! If my neighbour says he has been any faster than walk in the field I go into a panic!!!!! If weather stays good then the weekend it is!! Maybe? Possibly??!!

Ours went out last weds and are happier for it, they and we were ready!! Our 13yr old shire x is naked and will only get a lightweight put on if it's chucking it down or wind/rain together, he is having his treat ball in the am with a handful of pony nuts in and at night is having one small slice of hay and a scoop of happy hoof.

Our 37yr old Arabx is rugged at night in either a light/medium/heavy depending on night temp and naked in day if dry/warm. She is still having hay/readigrass/fast fibre/hifi senior and mix and is also allowed to eat all the long green grass round the building.

My advice is don't worry, he isn't going to melt and let him enjoy some fresh air xx

Don't worry so much. If the horse is healthy and has shelter, food and water he will be fine. You can always put a LW rug on in wet+cold weather. :)

Mine's been out for about 3 weeks - unless it's raining or very chilly, he's nekkid during the day. He's got a high neck and belly clip but the rest is coming out in great wodges of fur and he's SO itchy that rolling when his rug comes off in the morning is the highlight of his day - scrubbing himself into the mud and grunting happily to himself...:D

I would say that it depends on your horse, you and the fields you intend to turn out into.
If your horse is happier in, or the field is still wet and there is not a lot of grass, then i would leave him a few more weeks. If he enjoys being out, and the field can take 2 horses 24/7 then I would go for it.
I have 2 horses, one lives out the other comes in at night, I just do what makes them happy. :)

Thanks for your replies. He is on individual grazing, so has plenty to himself, and its easy to feed him etc. He will still be rugged. I think I may just turn him out over night and see how he reacts. He can come in anytime if unhappy. And perhaps just bring in if weather turns. Wish I could be one of those people who just does it!! Have had horses for many years and have always been funny about turning out overnight??!! Might get therapy!!

I would imagine ours will be out at the end of the month :). We are leaving them out later and they are not waiting at the gate to come in. YO's have lived out all year and the old pony won't go out until may when double figures at night.
I can't wait...... I'm always desperate for them to come in but can't wait for them to go back out.
They will probably wear light rugs at night for another month. Don't worry your horse will be fine :).

Mine (both fully clipped, one a TBx) have had a total of 12 nights in this winter - bliss! They are both much happier, and two or three of those nights were for my benefit as I wanted them clean for the next day's early start.

I'd be going nuts if mine were still in at night, I feel for your friend!

Mine has been out at night again for a week, she's clipped and is naked on warmer days, lightweight back on every night. She's a welsh d so not exactly a pansy, but she's hot in her lightweight most mornings when I go up, usually about 7.30!

Thinking about it her l/w is no fill so I suppose technically a rainsheet, depends how people class it.

Mine will be out as soon as I can get the sheep off out fields - we rented our big grass field out for tack over winter and should be gone next weekend......fingers crossed!! Will probably leave a bale of haylege in the field and feed once a day when they go out. I'll keep my big lad rugged as he's clipped and does lose condition easily. Little hairy dirty pony can go out naked.......and he'll enjoy it!!

I wish my horse could live out! :( He used to before I had him and will happily stay out/not wait to come in etc but he's so lethargic and sleepy afterwards that I can't do anything with him!

So he'll be turned out 6am-9pm instead :(

Mine went back to living out a few days ago and is the happiest he's been all winter! Naked in the day with a rug on at night, fed morning and evening.

Ours (2 of them) were chucked out last week. The other 3 are out 24/7 anyway though. So glad not to be mucking out anymore! Another couple of weeks and they will be moved onto the other 6 acres that has been resting since Jan.
