Genie (already clipped) will come in at the end of this month unless it suddenly goes VERY cold. She's as happy as larry out in the field with a rug on, so won't bring her in which she hates until I have to.
Titch will be out until probably end of November/beginning of December. She's tough and won't be clipped, and I doubt she'll melt!!
When there`s no grass in their current field and the weather turns cold!
Fields get rotated every 12 weeks... moved into new last week and its full of grass.... when they go into the winter field behind the stables they`ll come in then
Mine will be coming in tonight as soooooo horrible today and I am a softy and hate to hear the wind and rain but they will prob stay out again if dries up
Mine aren't coming in this year - were previously stabled at night all year round (yard rules I'm afraid) they are out with shelters at the mo. The natives field is actually growing grass on it as we speak!! Quicker than its getting eaten!
They will be being 'moved up' to the winter fields in about 3 weeks time I think. The winter fields are absolutely full of lovely green grass.
Mine wont be coming in at all, she loved being out 24/7 last winter despite the several feet of snow! Thankfully the yard has enough field space for the horses to move around without them being trashed. They all get a round bale of hay in the field so lack of grass isnt anything to worry about!
Not going to happen I have more horses than stalls and a distinct aversion to mucking out, the hassle and clockwatching that go with having horses in.
If, on the other hand, I actually did something with mine and they were clipped etc then I suppose I would have to. They still wouldn't be in until the snow came, and stayed, that could be the end of the month, or it could be Christmas.
my rule of thumb is that when it is raining most of the day I am bringing my mare in for a break from it overnight - if it is sunny and dry she is staying out - rugged 24/7 at the mo as trying to stop her coat from growing too thick too quickly to put off clipping so soon.. mind you rode her yesterday and she was a sweat monster afterwards so may need to rethink my plan of action soon....
Mine have been in at night since mid August, they'd really had enough, so swapped them over.
In fact all 3 are now in today because of the weather, the TB's went out for a few hours this morning, but were really ready to come in by lunchtime, the WB stayed in cause he don't do wind and rain just gallops about like a stress head and I don't want to risk him doing a leg in slidding about all over the place
mine are in today cos I dont want them trashing the paddock in this rain. paddock welfare rates more highly than soggy pony so they will be in whilst it rains but chucked back out as soon as its dry . Advantages of them being at home means I dont have to do anything by the calender
TheTB will probably come in at night from end of this month, a lot of people at her yard are bringing in already, and a lot are in today because of the rain. I think our horse is getting to a stage where the grass no longer completely satisfies her and she gets quite hungry so needs to come in at least of a night time to eat ad lib haylage. They have it out in their field too during the winter but I don't know how much gets eaten vs trampled. Soon she'll be having breakfast as well.
The pony (who lives at a different yard) will stay out for as long as possible depending on how the field holds out.
Would bring mine in now if I could but no one else at the yard brings in yet! I'm dreading this winter as my mare hates being out in the cold n wet but can't bring her in either cos she won't come in in her own aarrgghh!!
Two of mine are living out this winter and my gelding will come in soon I think. Most on my yard stay out until 5th November but I think in the next week or two my gelding will be in.
i brought both of ours in this morning due to the weather,
its still raining very heavy so they might even be in tonight,
it wont hurt them though due to there being no grass and the paddocks starting to look cut up.
Whisk is in at night all year round anyway but I have just brought Sophie in as it has done nothing but rain all day. Guess what......yep it's stopped!! Ah well she can stay in at nights now 'til Spring. She is an incredibly clean mare anyway so only adds 20 minutes or so to my daily routine.
They are in today as it is chucking it down and the fields are cutting up - not enough grazing for no of horses at livery yard tbh so need to be careful with ours and make sure they last! Out again tomorrow morning, they will only be in to save the fields if it rains alot, and will regularly be in overnight when we get frosts to keep sugar sensitive mare off the frosty grass. The rest of the weather they can cope with very well and are healthier to be out. Good rugs and enough food - all is well!
About 10 minutes ago! I'm soaked - they are soaked, I am going to let them drip dry for a bit ... one little mare was shivering so much all 4 legs were shaking - blimin wuss!!
Apart from a few fine nights in mid summer, mine are in at night all year. Not cos of a lack of grass, but in spring/autumn we want to reduce risk of grass sickness as we are in v high risk area, and in winter we have snow for 3 months! Also ponio would be THIS big if she had ad lib grass.
But in summer they sometimes go out at night and in during the day, which they enjoy.
I gave in last weekend, it was freezing, there is no shelter in the field and no grass either! Usually dont bring in til end Oct'ish but he keeps pulling his posts out and breaking into other fields so brought him to retain some daily turnout throughout winter. If I had space and shelter he would be out alot longer!
I play it by ear tbh...mare is out tonight but has been in all day due to the weather- I actually quite enjoy mucking out as suzy is so clean the stable routine but I am sure my mindset will chenage by next feb/march time!! haha!
