I prefer to get them young. Ideally unbroken, I find I tend to get a stronger bond with them that way.

That said, if it's a well-trained, good horse I'd consider older. My max age would be 15
 
Depends what you want. I like unbroken babies too, so don't tend to look at anything over 3/4. If I wanted an eventer ready to go I'd be looking at early teens max. If I wanted a saintly kids pony for a nervous brat I'd not rule anything out up to 30(+?!) if it was the right beast.
