I made the decision that I would rather travel to get to work and have the horses near home so that in an emergency I coul dbe there very quickly. Also going straight to horses from work (or on the way) will always end up in me covered in mud through winter, so learnt the hard way!
I don't really have a choice as I work in central London but live on the Middlesex / Herts borders! If I worked closer to home, and there were facilities nearby, I would probably consider a yard near to work.
I actually live slap bang in the middle of yard and work - both are 3 miles away in opposite directions and can't get to work from farm or farm from work without going past my house. This means I can always go home to change either after yard and before work or after work and before yard. I hate getting changed in my tack room, although it is easier at work now that they have showers - I occasionally run in, andshower and change in work.
If I had to choose though I would always have them closer to home as there's weekends to consider and I go up twice a day then whereas we have rotas for weekday mornings so I only ever go up once a day then.
my yard is halfway between home and work, and i shower when i get to work... I always try to go for one on route to the office, my only requirement is its home side of the M25, but the M25 Junction marks 1/2 way from home to work, so I guess nearer to home.
My yard is pretty much the same distance from work as it is from home so because my YO turns my horse out in the morning I go home to work to stables to home everyday in a triangle shape. I'd probably prefer stables closer to home but it wouldnt be so convenient if I had to go past home to get to the stables after work when I finish at 5pm.
I picked neither as I'd have to way up cost and facilities before being able to choose. I wouldn't go to a dumpy yard just because it was close. But neither would I pay through to nose at a closer yard, if I could get the same cheaper further afield.
