When did people become so rude?

As we have to ride on the road to get to any decent hacking, we get our fair share of idiot / inconsiderate / verbal drivers and I read other posts about people being told off / talked to when out on bridle ways.

We had a woman, who was trying to overtake from behind, in traffic and in the middle of a traffic calming system tell my OH that 'she was selfish' for not letting the woman past, we have also been told to 'ride single file' and to 'ride side by side' (not by the same person) and to 'get off the road'.

I have even noticed this on my motorbike, with people moving over to try and prevent me overtaking and even trying to race me (one guy had two small children in the car), despite the fact I ride a 1200cc bike that will easily see off anything but the fastest cars.

So, when did people become so intolerant and rude?

I don't know but it really irks me. Sadly the well mannered people seem to be in the minority.

And why have people stopped saying 'excuse me?'

In the supermarket, if you are a grown up, they stand behind you and cough. And then sigh. And then cough again. You are trying to choose your yoghurt, and if they said 'excuse me' you would move over and let them choose first, but if they just stand there sounding like they are having an existential crisis, why would you?

If you are a child, they just shove you out of the way. And then complain about young people having no manners.

When my kids were little, I used to get so cross and say 'I do realise she's only small, but she does speak English and understands 'excuse me' perfecty well.'

I had simiilar thoughts recently, it seems to have crept up on us!
What did concern me was the trigger for me - the school run to a small village school.

One mum in a HUGE Jeep beeped me on a single track lane withut passing places ( was totting on to get out of the way). The best informed me that she was "entitled" to do 60mph in the lanes and that I shouldn't obstruct her because she is busy.
I agree that it is a lack of common courtesy and manners but why?

I don't know... its not as if its only the younger drivers.

Middle aged/old/young all ages seem to be arses.

I also can't stand people who cough/mutter rather than saying excuse me. Or even more annoying when I say "excuse me" they glare at me like I've just asked them eff off

I have found buses getting worse, anyone else??? we have to ride around a bus route not very busy as they made a bypass so it is now the 'old road' but still buses seem intent in not even easing off the gas and going past us as if we are not there. Luckily i have a lot of quiet road riding so they do not go onto the main road until thye are ready for such idiots but of course at the end of the day they are horses not machines!!!
My mum once had a cooked chicken (reduced) snached out of her hands by an OAP. when i went and said excuse me was that not very rude?? she just said she was there first and needed it more as she lived on a pension. I walked away, now i am afraid i am getting slightly rude myself as i am fed up with being polite and offering to help OAP's when unfortunatly all i seem to get is abuse!

I'm lucky that when I'm out and about with the baggage the buses slow right down for us

Mind you a chunky D x trad cob could do a bit of damage to the side panels

I wish i coud get aware with wearing a bib that said

''slow down unless you would like you car writen off'

but i guess that would proabably just get me sued!!!!

When I was in my teens I used to hold the doors open in Woolies and anyone that didn't say 'Thank You' I used to say 'Thank you for going through the door I've held open for you' just for something to do for a laugh.
Now I'm not quite as rude, if someone pushes in front of me in a queue I either say to them 'Oh sorry I didn't realise the queue had to go to the left/right' and go stand behind them to the left/right very obviously. To which they say 'oh sorry was I pushing in front of you' (knowing that they had) so I then say 'that's fine I'm not in any rush and I can see you're in a hurry, your need is obviously more important than mine' Then I watch how red they go and try not to laugh.

What IS the rush?

We are incredibly lucky with our local buses, all but one driver (who is not on our route very often)are fantastic

So much so that we have e-mailed our praise to the bus company

I have to say that I do deliberately get in the way of drivers who try to overtake me on local roads, if I am driving up to the speed limit, because I know that there are walkers, horses etc. round here and feel that speed limits should be observed, if that uposets people who want to exceed the speed limit then what a shame

It seems being polite and having good manners is getting to be a rare thing these days. I hate to say it but I find horsey people to be among the worst!

Has anyone noticed at events such as your horse live or HOYs for instance you often get shoved and pushed around with out any apology.

I am a horsey person myself so I can say this!
I also find when driving and slowing down for riders you often just get a dirty look instead of thanks.
I also often see riders on a mobile when riding on the roads and this is not only dangerous, but very rude as well.
I now put my window down and shout THANK YOU to any rider who does not thank me for slowing down in the hope that it may shame them in to better manners.
