mine are booked in for end of feb they are 2008 foals. I always think if you are not going to keep them entire don't beat around the bush get them done.

If they need to be mixed with fillies, then at around 6 months old. If not, normally book it for early Spring of their second year.

Mine was done at 9 months as we had no intension of keeping him entire. he was then able to be turned out with the other horses instead of being kept just with our gelding.

If they are not intended for breeding and the balls have dropped I try and get them done while still on the mare. If they are on the mare they don't seem to notice but after it seems to knock them back so much more . Having run TB studs(NH) my boys usually didn't go to the sales until they were three or four so having a pair of braincells between their legs would have driven me round the bend as some were barking anyway. One I had done as a foal is currently trouncing (sp) everyone he meets so it didn't hold him back.

My boy is being done at 6 months while he is still with the mare, once he has recovered he will then be split off and put out with a gelding. I would have liked to leave him a little longer as he is a very calm little chap but am on a livery yard where the concept of a potentially frisky colt would alarm the other clients

I personally like a colt to mature a little before cutting. I don't tend to relish rides on geldings cut very early as they don't seem to offer me any spark!!! I prefer mares on a whole but if my foal this year is a colt (which I'm sure he is!!) then I will try to keep him entire until at very earlieast spring the following year.

Finn is getting done next month, he'll be 8 months then. I was going to get him done while he was still on the mare, but I weaned him and he chilled out so I've put it back a bit as only one has dropped at the moment and it'll be easier if both are down.

Vet happy with early March.

My previous one was cut at 11 months. The current two are being cut on 23rd March when one will be almost 12 months (born 2 April 2008) and the other almost 11 months (born 1st May 2008). They're out with my rising 2 year old filly but haven't shown any coltish tendencies yet.

My boy was done at 6 months, he never even seemed sorry for himself once the woosyness from the sedative wore off. Not true he did not canter or gallop for a day.
