Very nervous and excited, having horse vetted tomorrow. He is quite a long way from where I live so if he passes, will have him delivered by transport company next week.
In that case, when would I pay? Is it normal practice to pay when picking up horse, or would I pay tomorrow if vetting successful?

Normal practice (for me anyway!) to pay in cash as you are picking him up. How far away is he? I would definately be there to witness him loaded into the lorry in full health etc. Hand over the cash once he is loaded and ready to go and get his passport.

Pay when you are physically handed the horse. Otherwise there is always the possibility they might to a runner with your money. Also, horses have a horrible habit of injuring themselves and would you still want it, if it hurts itself in between the time it got vetted and then delivered ?

Once you consider it yours, get it insured.

Notwithstanding that your new Ned is quite a long way from you, I would still make the effort to go and "do it" yourself. Some friends of mine went to see a horse, rode it, jumped it, perfect. However, they then spent nearly 2 hours trying to load it and in the end gave up. If they had handed over the cash prior to loading it, that would have been it - deal done. Just get in the car and go and oversee things. Better safe than sorry.

How exciting!

Definitely pay when you pick him up - as others have said anything could happen until then, and until then it is still their horse. Make sure your insurance runs from when you collect him as well.

Out of interest, which vets did you go with?

Pay when you pick the horse up. You need to find out how they want paying because if it is a bankers draft it will have to have the correct name on of the seller.

Paton & Lee are going to do the vetting and hoping to use Phoenix transport. Thanks to all who helped with these suggestions.

I just wanted to add, incase you hadn't done it already, have his insurance in place before he travels. Just in case anything happens during the journey home. God forbid it would, but it's those first few days of travelling and settling in that the unexpected can happen. Best to be protected. Best of luck!
