When do puppies start sleeping through the night?!

Myrtle arrived on the 1st of June aged 7 weeks - she's wonderful but hard work! We've had an Italian Spinone puppy before (Millie) and she was amazingly easy to toilet train and probably started sleeping through the night after a week, but Myrtle is proving more difficult!

So, the routine is as follows:

We take Myrtle out for toilet after every sleep, every mealtime, every playtime and so far she's never pooped inside. She has spent a penny probably 5 or 6 times indoors, sometimes even after we've been outside for a long period of time.

Myrtle has a dog crate which has a bed in it, vet bed, a bagpuss with a hot water bottle in and it's covered with a blanket. When she falls asleep on our knee or on the sofa we move her into her bed and she snuggles with bag puss. We do this during the day. Sometimes she puts herself to bed into it.

During the night we have the crate in our bedroom with us as Millie sleeps on our bed. She snuggles down at around 10.30pm (after last wees) and sleeps till around 2.30pm when she will grumble and whine. I (or my OH) take her downstairs and outside, try not to put any lights on and we go out for wees and/or poo. She will then snuggle down again until the same happens around 5.30pm.

She does go to the toilet every time we go out, we don't make a fuss of her, or eye contact etc etc.....but the lack of sleep is def becoming a bit wearing.....any hints or tips on either the sleeping or the toilet training?

I made the mistake of having archie in my bedroom when I first got him....I personally think they should be away from their owners at night so that they learn to self sooth...bit like a baby but I don't think you're allowed to leave them in the kitchen :rolleyes:
 
Sometimes bitch puppies get cystitis which makes them want to pee more. Maybe worth getting a sample for the vet to test. If that is clear then start ignoring the whining until she stops then take her out but make sure you do not talk or fuss her so she knows it is purely out foe a pee.
 
It all depends on the pup- Ive had terrier pups be clean all night (11pm-7am) at 12 weeks. Our black GSD was 15 months before his first totally clean night!! However Id say most dogs should be clean with just the occasioal mistake, by 4 1/2 to 5 months.
 
as someone else said, Id rule out a urine infection but tbh Id expect symptoms 24/7.

You may find that she just settles with time, or you may find this is her and she has learned that she squeaks and you get up! Each to their own and this is in no way meant critically but your post does read as if she is a baby:D It made me chuckle a little. If there are no health problems and she doesnt settle, you may have to go down the route of putting her in her crate, in another room and ignoring her. All my pups are crated from day one in our utility room and usually by 10-12 weeks they will go all night without a peep. If you do that and break the habit and be tough for a few weeks you could always then allow her back in your room when she is bit older and her sleeping pattern is established if that's what you prefer. Hope that helps.

I agree with Neversaynever, at the moment she doesn't have to learn to be clean because she has her humans on demand to let her out at her every whim;)
 
Thanks for your replies folks - def no cystitis symptoms, Millie had that as a pup and being an ex VN I do know what to look for. I thought she might have had a touch of it last week, but it lasted a couple of hours and vet said it was a reaction to her first jab.

Bad morning this morning as she's tiddled 3 times inside even though we've been outside a lot this morning. I think it's just a bad day :)

I'm too soft - couldn't not have the dogs in the bedroom. We don't get up at every whinge, she does self soothe if left, but if pees are needed the loudness increases and she's def needed toilet time!

Will just keep going - after all, she's only 8 weeks old. Our older girl came from the same breeder and she's done a different routine with Myrtle than she did with Millie. This batch of puppies where allowed to just toilet anywhere in the puppy room, whereas with Millie they had toilet paper down and were encouraged to go on that....wonder if it's set Myrtle back a bit as she just sees all floors as toilets?!

Thanks Spudlet, should we not let her out when she cries during the night then? Would she just not wee in her crate then? Don't want that to become a habit.
 
It depends on the pup and people have different views on this but seven weeks is a tad early for me to bring a puppy home so you are probably playing catch-up in that regard and as you acknowledge, she is only eight weeks old - I don't like them to be away from mum until nine weeks. Her bladder will be tiny. Also think about her last exposure to food and water before bedtime - if she has free acces to as much as she wants at her age, she is going to want to pee more.

I would also move her out of bedroom - you're probably waking her without realising it (turning over in bed, snoring, whatever!) my adult dog has always stayed dry overnight but my Mum woke him up when she left at half six by slamming the front door and he started whining to go for a pee immediately when he normally can hold it for another two hours.
 
If she can't last all night, that's fine - but watch she doesn't develop the habit of realising she can get you up if she wants to, once she is capable of holding it all night.

Mind you I must admit I've never house-trained a puppy from my bedroom, so I've never been in this position to be fair. Last time I was involved with housetraining we did it the old-fashioned way, with newspaper down at night and cleaning up in the morning, and he just stopped needing to go at night after a few weeks, as he grew.:)

She is still only very little, after all, so I wouldn't worry too much.
 
I personally wouldn't panic too much if she is only 8-9 weeks old now? Our pup is 4 months now, the first 2-3 weeks (we collected him at 8 weeks) we were up a couple of times a night, then he started only asking once. He hasnt woken me up at night for a good few weeks now.
We had him in our room to start with, then went away for the weekend when he was about 12 weeks and he was in the kitchen there (small holiday cottage on one floor) and then when we got home, crate stayed downstairs. He now goes through from about 10.30 to 7am.
He also pee'd on the floor quite a few times for the first month or so but now at 4 months is completely house trained. Last hurdle to cross is the car sickness but that's not his fault!
 
I love spinones! I've been trying to persuade my OH to let me get one!

In terms of pups sleeping all the way through the night, I'm afraid every one is different. I've known some do it from day one (my pet dog did from 10 weeks old) but I've known some take up til they're four months old! The fact she wakes you up and goes when you give her the chance says to me she needs to go out and personally I would prefer a good few nights of lack of sleep if it means she's clean overnight.

But ditto CaveCanem I would move her into a different room, and cover the entire crate with a thick duvet in case the light mornings are also waking her up.

We picked H up at 8 weeks. He was up twice a night in the first week, once a week the 2nd week and then went through the night. We had him in his crate at the bottom of the bed the first few nights then he was downstairs.
 
Oh and when I told my vet when in for the 2nd jab he was going through the night he was amazed and said he was jealous!! So clearly not that common at 10 weeks!
 
Edible puppy! We have one next door to us who is a bit bigger than this but the same colour and just as adorable.
 
Aww, what a wee cutie! my pup was sleeping through the night from about 10/11 weeks. we have him in the living room at nights in a crate though so that might have helped.

Definitely not with the rain and wind we had last night!! One of my boys was particularly slow maturing and took longer than the other to be able to hold his bladder through the night! Myrtle will get there.....unless she just happens to like a little stroll and some night time air!!:D
 
I defiantly agree with what people are saying about not having pup in your room.
I had my terrier pup in a crate in my room and the minute I rolled over or something he would whine to go out.
After 2 weeks of getting up a few times a night I moved him out of my room and he went straight through. He had my other dog in the crate for company and would go 10-6.30 with no accidents, I did have to let him out as soon as I woke even before I had a pee!!!
He's now 2 years old and either sleeps in daughters or my bed at night!!
 
Last night she slept all the way through! 10.30pm to 7am, was really pleased! She's still tiddling every now and then, but that's to be expected. She's very willful!

Thanks so much for posting this... My Lab pup Fudge will be arriving home in 1 month and I've been wondering the same thing.

With Joey wasn't easy, it took him a while before he could wait, by OH was up from 5am so that helped....

I'm very scared (good scared) when Fudge comes in... but reading all these comments really help!!
