When do they start to show?

My mare is about 3 months gone and I was wondering roughly when she should start to show the foal? She's a maiden, kinda podgy cob who's not particularly fit :-)
 
it will possibly be some time before your mare show's she is pregnant.

my maiden didnt really look pregnant all the way through, i've a picture of her literally 4 days before she poped and she just looked grass fat ! i still dont know where she put the little foalie.

the excitement grows as the pregnancy goes on, you've a while to go yet, but its going to fly by !!! best of luck and keep a picture diary, its really helpfull to check back on as you go - its amazing how much they change without you being able to see it on a daily basis :)
 
Bennions Field is right! Maiden mares in particular can hide a foal well. And of course the foetus is still very small by 150 days (the size of a small terrier!) Then they start to grow. But a big, roomy mare can get to 6 weeks before foaling without showing VERY obvious signs! I regularly look at some of my ID mares in January/February and think: "Mmmm - has she lost it?"
 
Please help: Are there other ways to tell if a mare is pregnant?

I've got a 14.2 cobby 3 yr old that i bought about 10 weeks ago.

Don't know anything about her background & she has ballooned with the most enormous tummy over the last 3-4 weeks, thing is, she's not fat elsewhere.

I did phone the vets but they said no panic as it would not be this year as too late, but now i'm wondering, can they foal in Oct/Nov time?
 
Yes they can foal at this time of year.

Best to get a blood test done, or vet can come and do an internal examination.

She may of course just be fat, and / or wormy. Take it you wormed her when she arrived?
 
This mare has had at least 7 foals. She foaled 8 hours after this picture was taken. She didn't look in foal until the final month when her tummy went a little south. Occasionally I could see the baby's feet kicking her mum, usually in the evenings.

She went all through the winter with no change to her shape or weight and there was nothing obvious to show she was in foal and as Janet say's it is easy to start to convince yourself there is no foal cooking ! I guess a lot depends on the general shape of the mare. A blood mare will be a very different shape to this cob or ID types.

My maiden mare is huge already at nearly 4 months, she is on good grazing and has put weight on but she definately has an unmistakable 'bump' already... :) the stallion seems to throw big foals so I'm worried she's carring an elephant in there...!
 
Scarlett, the baby will only be a few kilo's, as Janet say's small terrier.

My vet kept on and on at me about not allowing our mare get heavy and insisting I did not feed too much. If the foal is too big the mare is at a high risk during foaling.

I am sure Janet will give you more guidance.

Thanks :-) I didn't worm her as she came through a friend who had done when she arrived on her yard. She is now due again, which is one of the reason's for my concern about whether she is or isn't pregnant.

I did speak to vet about a blood test but you need to have an idea about dates, or so they said. They have suggested that i take her in to them so that she can be put in the stocks for an internal..........poor girl :-(

Think that's what i'll have to do, although i'll be fed up if i'm charged a small fortune just to be told she's fat!
