At what point do YOU clip?

Do you wait until a certain date? Does it depend on your horses workload/coat length?

Debating whether I should clip my NF yet...he's started to get his winter coat so is very itchy which is making his sweet itch worse and is getting very sweaty in lightwork, however should I really clip before the main bulk of his coat has come through?!?!

Sounds to me as tho you have answered your own question. If he's getting very sweaty in work then definitely yes as long as you have rugs for him when turned out. Apart from showing folk there isn't IMO a right or wrong time to clip. Obviously if you show then clipping too late in the Spring can affect the summer coat. Many people show jumpers especially often clip their horses throughout the year for ease and benefit to their horses who are in hard work, often older horses take extra time to get their summer coats and loose them early as do natives, hence why I say there is no right or wrong time to clip depending on the type of horse and what it's being asked to do work wise. Get clipping and just have plenty of rugs for him should it turn cold.

Clipped my boy on wed there- beginning 2 get sweating when working looked like teddy & I was fed up getting covered in hair every time I touched him! He's now sporting a smart withers 2 stifle number- 1st time I've done a 'shape' & not just whipped the whole lot of & am quite proud of my handiwork!!

I'm going to do my 20 year old soon, his coat is through and he was far too hot today. I have my own clippers so can clip as many times as I like, and will probably just give him a gullet/chin groove, which I'll keep low but extend past his shoulders so I clip the area where the girth goes. As this'll be so small, I won't rug him, but once he gets the next clip, probably a blanket this year, hell go into a full neck 100g turnout. If I clip him out, he'll be in a heaveyweight. He lives out 24/7.

I wait as long as possible!! I hate clipping, I am useless at it, can handle the horse, clippers etc, but I just cannot do straight lines!! So I will probably clip in october.

My boy looks like a grizzly bear already, I prob wont clip him for another fortnight, clipping just makes winter so final, i would normally not clip til the middle of october, but this year, for some reason, hair is growing faster. he looks so much better clipped anyway, takes that stupid beard off him for a while, makes him pretty
