...and do you rug much (if at all) before you do your first clip of the year in autumn/winter?
Just interested to hear really :)

I have a 13 year old belgian stamped dutch bred WB who was imported from Holland and I have owned him now for six years. I am SO lucky as he has never had to be clipped, his coat is short, flat and shiny all year round. One year I did try to clip him but it took about 2 hours as my clippers played up (due to lack of use I shouldn't wonder) and I got about a mug full of hair of him!! LOL

Don't know how the climate fairs in Holland with our climate but I think there a quite a few WB's who don't need clipping these days as I know of others that don't clip theirs.

I do believe that you are meant to clip no later that 1st March but not sure if that's an old wives tail as it can ruin the summer coat. When I have had horses that I have had to clip I have clipped twice and gone into heavier rugs straight away (according to temp). I used to do my first clip around end of Sept beginning of October.

Depends on weather really, start rugging when get to below 10 degrees at night and clip when they start getting sweaty and it doesn't dry well - usually ends up being end of Oct/ Nov time

Im clipping my mare in a week or 2. If I wasnt showing i would leave it a little longer but shes a bit too hairy lol. I dont rug much before hand, the day before i give her a bath, i tend not to do such a messy awful job when shes nice and clean lol!

Obviously depends on how much work your horse is doing and how hot it gets. However, I tend to wait as long as possible, otherwise you will end up clipping every couple of weeks as the hair is growing so fast in the early Autumn.
