I was out with a friend at the weekend and ended up discussing bute, she has 20yr old 12hh pony that needs 1/2 a sachet day to keep it pain free for riding & it's own sanity. As without work pony is miserable and without bute is in pain and is nasty with other ponies in turnout! How long this can go on for she is not sure.. But it got me thinking..

My boy has arthritis and is on a satchet of Danilon (bute equivalent) every other day to keep him comfortable. The last twice I have ridden he has been a bit more stiff than usual at the beginning of the ride and though he has warmed up fine, just to make sure he is comfortable, I have increased his dose to every day for 4 days to give whatever has been aggravating him a chance to hopefully settle down again. If it doesnt, it will be a visit from the vet (again!

I don't like to give bute for lameness as I'd rather be aware of how bad it is/ if it is improving. But I did give it to my horse when he cracked a tooth.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 'bute is a POM and can only legally be given under veterinary supervision...
Having said that, I have some sachets stockpiled from past injuries...so am a handy source if anyone's vet advises them to bute the horse before they come out.
Oh, and don't worry, it's locked away as per COSHH.

I have box of both Bute and Danilon, I give it to my horse when he needs it, he always have foot puncture so those come handy on site with out costing too much money in calling vet out when i know what i am doing but on other hand i always check with someone for advice before giving it to him, If there is new ailment that i am not aware of the vet comes out and advises me.

I know a horse 24 year old 16 hands TB who is very arthritic, covered in melomnas (sp) he's drugged up (i think 4/6 bute a day) to his eyeballs so his numpty owner can keep riding him.... we (the yard) is upset on his plight... he looks like he really had enough. If he was mine he would be gone long long time ago.

Ive given my horse bute when he got a bad bite on the neck, and I gave my other one danilon for a week when he was stiff.

I wouldnt give it for lameness unless a vet told me to.

I keep a small supply of bute and have always done when I have had old horses so if they are stiff I can give them one for comfort. My old TB had one every other day to keep her comfortable.

Cairo has bute from time to time. My vet is happy for me to keep a supply and give as I think fit. If Cairo is not right after a week, I will call him and normally he tells me to keep on with bute for another week and then call him again.

Chancer - would only get bute on vet's advice unless I saw him kicked and it was nothing serious but he was going to be sore as in bruised for a day or two - I have already asked my vet how much he should have in that scenario.

If I have any doubt, I call the vet first before giving bute.

My 19yr old tb mare has arthritis and is now on 1 bute every other day to keep her comfortable - she started being a bit uncomfortable in the mornings recently.
These were given after consultation with my vet. He is happy for myself and yard manager to find the level which helps her to be comfortable and we informed him of the dosage we felt suited her best. If we thought it needed changing upwards we would consult back with him.
She is retired and a lady of leisure!

I always have a supply of bute as my 17yo shetland has been having on and off lami attacks however finally it seems to be under control (she's now sound!) BUT she also has slight athritis in her hind legs and an old injury means one of her hips sort of clicks, so vet advised on her occassional "bad" days to give her a bit of bute. I try not to though as I hate feeding it for any length of time due to the possible side effects. I personally dont think any medication is good for horses long term (unless its the only thing keeping them going).

I would give it to any of my others if they had a swelling and I didnt think there was anything sinister behind it. I have to be very careful about giving bute to my 2 horses as they compete BSJA etc. so they would only get it on vets advice generally.
