I know we don't really want winter to come and it is still summer

But this wet and cold snap has got everyone thinking ahead. So I was thinking about when to bring in at night.

We have the added problem of NO GRASS so it won't just be down to weather.

I was hoping to keep him out until the end of October but that is looking unlikely now at this rate it will be middle of Sept :(

You?

I have been bringing my boy in for about a week now. Trying to save a bit of grass!! He comes in between 8-9pm and is out again at 5.30am so still out plenty. And he does love to have a lie down in his stable so I don't feel too guilty!! Like you I was hoping to leave him out until a lot later in the year x

I usually change round when I come back from holiday end Sept.

Depending on weather as soon as its in single figures at night . Thats what I use as a guideline same in summer as soon as its in double figures at night :)
Considering we have more horses than acres we have much too much grass at moment.

yeah I've been bringing him in for 2/3 hours for some hay/sleep and exercise for weeks now.

Good point about the temps, I never leave out until its above 10/11 over night so will use that as a guide to bring in too

When being out 24/7 makes too much mess off the fields.

Ours don't exactly come in though. One of the fields we use has a barn with 4 stables in it American barn style so we straw up the middle and open 2 stables and straw them up so the horses have the choice of being in or out. D never comes out once there is a hint of bad weather though!

mine are out and will be until end of october although prob in heavyweights by then. Then be clipped and fetched in. Although if you use the single figure as a guide i should hvae been bringing in for the last week. It has been 8-9 at night here. Boys are out in 70-100g rugs at mo though all day and night as its poo weather!!

Yeah I know what you mean. Micah is out in 100g all the time at the moment, yuck!!
what weight do you mean by HW ?

We're lucky in that we have enough grass, so unless we get snow like last year, I'll bring in at Christmas and hopefully out again beginning to mid-march.

As long after Bonfire Night as possible.
It will very much depend on the weather though. We ae quite happy to put hay/lage out but if the fields get too wet, the horses will have to come in over night - usually about 12 hrs.

Ours have to come in once the clocks change. When is that this year? Mine will be out until then hopefully. With rugs on most likely. My stables aren't warmer than my field anyway as they are very open plan so it's more about stopping them cutting up the ground than anything else. Nitty won't stand in a box with walls. Silly filly

I will probably turn mine around at the end of October, but it very much depends on the weather, state of the fields etc.

This. We do like to have them out as much as possible, but it's very weather-dependent - and we really don't want poached fields.

P

I agree with this. They always stay out in the night until after our bonfire if possible, but our fields get pretty wet and we have one very prone to mudrash and another quite prone to it, so we may have to bring in sooner to prevent that... We've had to move them out of the summer, wetter field already as the ground is going mushy in there.. Just the first signs of mud is starting to depress me.

I dont :p

My boys are out 24/7.

I have sectioned half of their field off as of last week, to try and preserve some grass??? the paddock is very very low, not bare but incredibly low, im actually wondering how theyre managing too look so good, they are both incredibly good doers, but seem to be surviving on fresh air - im actually wondering if i should start putting them some hay out or not

I have a new one in on isolation for a couple weeks so am bringing Lottie in to keep him company over night and have a decent feed to get chubby ready for winter. Rugged the others up at night now though. Quite cold and I don't want thick coats.

Mine are coming in over night from next weekend. I usually leave them until the end of September but they are giving me signs that they would prefer sooner rather than later (little grass but they come in every day for a hay net).

Mine will come in every night the week before Bonfire Night so that she can settle into the new routine before having to spend several nights scared half to death. But I'm having her in on wet nights and about every 8th night so that she can have a lie down and a proper rest. She is 28 with bad arthritis and doesn't lie down anywhere except in her stable plus she hates being rugged and I'd rather she had a comfortable night in naked than getting itchy withers from the rug (and yes, I do put extra padding under it to protect her boney bits). She lets me know when she fancies a night in by hanging around her stable, and going in if I leave the door open. The look on her face when she is in speaks volumes!

I'm not 100% sure when the yard likes them to come in, I think when the clocks change but can't remember.
Grass isn't a problem as we have plenty at the moment.

I bring in when it is going to be too wet or cold at night. So last week they had two nights in. I continue like this until they are having more nights in than out. Then I bring in every night. This is usually some time from the end of August to the end of September. The later the better! :D

When it starts to get muddy underfoot, so it really depends on the weather. Till then they just have the appropriate clothing on. They are both overweight at the mo, so a little loss of condition would be good.

I've never managed to leave out longer than early-mid October though, and I'm always relieved to have them in their lovely warm dry stables.
