When do you use bute?

M horse had a procedure (not surgery) for OCD a while back, and is now being brought back into work. My vet gave me a load of bute, and just said to use it when needed.

When he was first being brought back in I would put a sachet in his feed if he had been jumping around/full of energy. I'm now introducing longer periods of trot, and last night he did about 40 minutes trot work for a girl who is riding for me. He was a complete prat as he had been stabled for a few days, she wasn't used to it and he spent a lot of time half cantering and bouncing about.

He was ridden for about an hour, including ten minute warm up, cool down and a 5 minute 'chill out' halfway through.

Thinking about it - should I have put a sachet of bute in his feed, in case his leg/hock was inflamed? Is this when you would use it?

He has been turned out today, and I might take him for a gentle 20 minute stroll round the field, should I put a bute in his feed?

IMO - and this is only what i would do with my horses.

I tend to give my 19 year old arthritic mare a sachet if she is sore, I don’t give her one just incase she is sore after harder work. So in answer to your question i would give him a bute if he comes in today a bit sore of stiff because there is a good chance that the wont be sore and if you gave him the bute yesterday you wouldn’t know how much work he can cope with.
