prob a thick question, but never needed to use them, however, my horse will start eventing soon (intro level atm), are they a wise idea to start using them>?

I use them when he has sweated a lot, which isn't very often as he rarely sweats (arab!) however my OH's mare used to sweat as much as move, and in the summer would sweat in the field! She was a big 3/4 ID though so was not keen on the heat. We used to give her electrolytes every time she was ridden and salt in her feed when it was very warm out.

You can add them as and when you want. You can make your own by mixing lo-salt and table salt. You must make sure your horse has access to plenty of water and don't give them to an already dehydrated horse as they can draw water out into the gut and make them worse. My horse doesn't sweat much and drinks well so I only use them if it is very hot.
