When feeding antibiotics....

I wasn't there when vet was this is another person's interpretation of things. I think it's ok as long as first lot have time to be digested so don't see a problem with a 8am till 6pm gap.

Having just done a 10 day course of 2 a day I didnt even consider it, and my vet did not specify how long, it should not be a problem as long as the feeds are well spaced the drugs will do the job required.

I spose as it's given as directed by the vet, it should be ok. My boy was on 1 and a half sachets once a day. Did the trick!

..............and an additional question - he's now been given another 5 days and a probiotic to take with it. Never got given the probiotic last year for another horse with the same thing. Is this normal practise or are they just topping up the bill!!!

Vet just left anti bs with probiotic to be collected so didn't get anything but the message horse should take pb as well now due to it being a 10 day course!

I haven't been given probiotics with antibiotics by the vet but I do give Pink Powder for a couple of weeks when they're on a course.

It is advisable to give a probiotic with antibiotics. Research done on the topic isn't conclusive but if your horse were a top class competition horse or racehorse then he/she would automatically be put on probiotics with antibiotics. If your horse shows any sign of diarrhoea or colic on antibiotics then I would start of probiotic or yoghurt.

(Not mine but one I look after and offspring of my loan mare) He is a good doing cob living out 24/7 with a rug. During winter months just goes for sort hack at the weekend just to keep limbs moving, mental health (gets bored if totally turned away). Not a top level horse and agree if he did have any squits he'd be given pro biotic. Just wondering as I think this vet is just ££ up the bill. We had exact same thing last year with my mare and no mention of pro biotic etc. The tub has cost £23 apparently!
