I have decided after my years on HHO that the horses in the UK have to be the most pampered on earth!

at least the HHO ones

When I die I want to come back and live a life of luxury.

When the cold comes I will be assured a hot mash served to me every night

I will be cozy covered in rugs and kept in a warm stall up to my knees in straw or shavings every night .

I will be groomed and clipped even in winter

I will always have four shiny shoes on my hooves (some with jewels

The horses in the US will wish they had it like me and I will be worth three times what they are

Especially those Wisconsin horses that live out in brutal arctic style winters naked and outdoors with no hot mash only hay and barn temp grain to warm their bellies

Everyone on HHO makes me feel guilty

My horses have heated water buckets in winter...does that count ?

Just for my convenience of course

Dumping frozen buckets twice a day is not fun

Does anyone elses horses have it "rough" like mine?

Lol, it would be good if you were right!

Pampering can be a form of cruelty, i certainly wouldn't want to come back as a 'pampered' horse, humans humanize horses - they are horses for gods sake!!!

YES, mine rough it, out 24/7 and happier than any pampered horse i've ever met!

I wonder how many problem horses there are in the wild, poor things don't get bran mashes etc

Mine have lived out all year round in the past, but have been rugged and clipped as they also worked. these days they come in at night because that is the yard policy - and do you know what - they love their stables.

Some like being pampered, others might prefer to live out with minimal interaction with humans. Neither is necessarily better, just different.

My horses are telling me they would quite like me to get warm water to wash them with and maybe a solarium to dry them off with after - we haven't reached the furthest extremes of pampering yet!

My horse is far better looked after than I am, for a number of reasons;

- He has a vast array of clothes and accessories, depending on the weather and which colour takes my fancy. I have a very limited wardrobe, believe me!
grin.gif

- He gets a new set of shoes every 6 weeks - I get a new set once or twice a yr!
grin.gif

- I have my hair cut a few times a yr, he has his trimming and clipping done whenever he needs it
grin.gif

- We buy fruit, put it in our fruit bowl. We don't eat it all so we give it to him.
grin.gif

- He only has to work for 1/2 hr a few times a week. We have to work all the time!
grin.gif

- He has the vet whenever he needs it, I go to see the doctor only if I am on my last legs!
grin.gif

- He has a lovely massage several times a yr. Me - well I can never afford it for myself!
grin.gif

The list goes ON and ON............

I agree with you the_witch...... mine are handled regularly and LOVE human interaction and LOVE being worked. i'm lucky because mine are out in 25 acres but i think a horse would get very bored in a small paddock 24/7!

My boy use to love coming into his stable.. but he didn't want to stay in it for long periods! horses like routines and coming in at night is just that for many, mine use to walk himself to the stable

bringing horses in early evening and turning out late morning is common and in my opinion unacceptable! (not suggesting you do btw

Nope, I'm coming back as a pampered cat - like mine!
Fed 5 times a day, can go in and out as he pleases, sleeps anywhere he fancies, when he fancies, has a litter tray if he needs it and nice warm humans to sit on

Me too! My two cats have the most amazingly comfortable lives with no worries whatsoever.

Your artic style winters are much drier than ours, and I think most unclipped horses would be happy to live in your conditions. I've seen how horses are kept in Bavaria where it gets really cold and snowy, but its a dry sort of coldness. Unfortunately I'm in the wettest part of the UK, the West of Scotland, and my horse hates being out 24/7 when its continually wet.

So he'll stay out, not clipped but rugged up till its really horrible, maybe mid December and then come in.

I know your post is tongue in cheek but your horses wouldn't enjoy the W. of Scotland in December, January or February.

Well my instructor says she wants to come back as my horse as she has such a cushy life! I have just left her all tucked up in her stable with lots of hay and she's as happy as a piggy in doodah. Don't think either of us could cope with Wisconsin weather. Have to laugh though - a lot of people at the yard said they'd be keeping theirs out until new year. Its been wet and windy here today and guess what, they are all being brought in!

Mine are unclipped, unrugged hairy beasts! They're dont live out in the winter, but that's only because we dont really have enough shelter in the fields for me to feel ok with them staying out. 2 out of the 3 are shod, but minus the bling!

They get warm feeds when it's super cold and if i can be bothered trekking to the hot tap!

But yeah, i'd still like to come back as a horse!

Our 7 native rugged shod ponies recon they have life good. Unlucky for the other 3 unshod unclipped inrugged out 24/7. None of our get hard feed though.

NO! I understand that
wink.gif

I used to question all of it ( rugs etc)and was explained why a couple of years ago. I realise the climate is different
wink.gif

I also have only EVER seen my horses shiver in cold rain wuith muddy ground and NEVER freezing snow with rock solid frozen ground

I (as I said) was only joking around

Ours are all very pampered. With two exceptions to the opening thread - I don't feed warm bran mashes as understood this could upset the flora and fauna in the horse's gut and also the horses are barefoot. Other than that they are very pampered, although do live as horses not kids.

I dont think mine are pampered unlike some. My grey is outside in the cold with hail in his face and mud dripping off his forehead - he was imported from Portugal so I think the Scottish winters are a bit of a shock to him! All mine live out 24/7 (with the exeption of an elderly shetland who comes in at night) with access to stables / shelters. They are all hunter clipped but well rugged and well fed. Not really what Id call "pampered" since they're always filthy and hardly molly-cuddled!
