When is a horse 'dangerous'?

WandaMare - that's interesting, thank you! They say with PTSD in people it's like that, like a sort of pot of stress that's always near bubbling over so little things set you off so much quicker than someone who doesn't have PTSD so thier 'stress pot' is always much lower (don't think I explained that very well), and it DEFINITELY does ring true with horses as well I think. Sad really. Though I think a lot of my horse's problem is just being a welsh sec D, not necessarily his past homes (though they didn't necessarily help either!). I love him to bits but I will never buy a welshie again....

Victoria - yeah that's a good way of putting it about a sharer actually....the thing is, I'd love to go travelling next year, which I could do via work. Because he's ... 'sensitive' let's say, I was hoping I could find someone to get used to him for the first year with me around, then maybe they could go it alone next year if it worked out. Alternatively, I either won't go away or I'll have to just turn him out somewhere (fortunately he would make a very pretty and low maintenance field ornament).

I just heard from the sharer that she tried to get on him today and he was tense so she took her time, lots of talking to him, grooming etc, but still he freaked so she just groomed him and put him away - I think that might be my answer.... :-s

GN snapped his leadrope, shot across the yard and got between me and the dog and kicked it. Killed it outright. He really does look after me and in return I guess he demands that no-one else ride him. He was rescued off a meat wagon and had a terrible start so I guess he has issues from that. He is such a star for me that I just don't worry about it. Now I kinda like the fact that he makes me look good (because secretly I am a pants rider :D He does it all!!). Just enjoy your boy the way he is.

Wow that's an amazing story! What an awesome horse, you must have a really amazing relationship with him. That's lovely to hear.
 
Do the people riding him 'know he's naughty'?

I think sometimes when they're expescting something bad to happen it usually does ... ha do you know any really good riders (and maybe someone you may risk losing as a friend :eek:) that doesnt know him and ride him without having knowing he's a monkey?

I've struck them off my wish list too. I have lessons on one who frequently does bucking bronco. Today he was being a bit arsey so I told him off in a very cross voice..did it work? Nooo..he then refused to bloody move at all and started kicking out . I spend the rest of the lesson telling him what a good boy he was in my softest voice and had no further issues or bucking :o lesson learnt.

Thanks - we do have a pretty great relationship and I love him to bits. Although I do think the only reason he booted the dog was that he is clever enough to know that if Mum had ended up in hospital again, there would be a risk he wouldnt get any tea...:rolleyes:

Lol yes this is very true. I have debated this a lot with myself. Actually, it works quite well anyway because nobody really believes what I say about him being difficult, since most of the time he looks fine. So even when I try and explain about the spooking thing people only say 'ah but they all spook sometimes don't they' and that sort of thing. So, i normally explain a bit and leave it at that. Maybe I should hire in a completely unknown professional sometime!! I was thinking about that earlier actually and wondering if it would be a good idea. I can't decide...

Trasa - yes that sounds familiar!!! You have to spend your whole time pandering to their moods. Give me a lovely straightforward Arab or TB any day!!
