As I've seen a few threads about horses not selling I want to try & hit the market right next year!!

2012 is daughters last year on ponies - but I'm stuck on when to put up for sale! Ideally she wants a horse to play with over next winter & pony has to go first. So do I ....

A. Put him up for sale April/May time so girl can still do Blue Chip & POYS & potential new buyer can have summer season with him.

B. Get his double clears in & sell him with those or even better with a ride at scope if qualify for it (so bit later in year & hopefully will have been to trailblazers jumping & dressage finals too)

C. Let girl do everything with him next year & put him up for sale September/October time.

Really dont know what to do - ideally he would stay with us forever but that's not an option!! I'm not expecting a problem selling him but with the current climate you can never be sure!!!!

We sold two in July - phone did not stop ringing. One was a horrible coloured cob that had hunted and one was my old eventer who needed an easier life.

I think June/July are good times as everyone has a bit more time due to longer days, kids are nearly on holiday and life is easier than in the winter.

If your selling it as a bsja jumping pony then oct nov ready for the jan change over..but if for the pony club market then late spring ready for the summer months and camp and i would say for hunting pony's now at the start of the season.

Either A or B, but not C. Autumn is really not a great time for selling.

Ditto this, unless you are selling specifically for hunting.

However, for your normal child's competition/PC pony, many potential buyers will be put off buying in autumn because the winter months are not the best time for bonding with a new pony due to dark, cold, wet evenings after school limiting riding time! I know when we were looking for a new horse for the Sprog we didn't start viewing until April time.

We used to look to sell at the end of summer - especially with the jumping ponies as this gave the new jockey time to get used to the new ride before starting 2nd rounds or what used to be Paul Fabs (showing my age :o) in Jan/Feb - not sure what they would be now - they were the RIHS qualifiers which back then was the champs for the winter qualifiers.
If you'd qualified for HOYS then you'd sometimes try to keep the ride until after that if you thought you were in with a good shot which meant keeping the pony until October.
But then we only had RIHS and HOYS to worry about!
