When is the best time to geld?

it depends when you will be weaning, i personally would't have one done until it was at least 6 months old. my gelding was 11 months when i had him done, but that was because circumstances allowed me to have him done later than sooner.
also have him done when it is cooler when there are no midges to get into the wounds. (i.e october)

We have ours done while still on mare much less stressful. It can be done anytime really once they have two descended. Now actually wouldnt be bad not that many flys around and if out all the time the movement helps plus it is nice and dry. (Famous last words)

Usually I would say when they get above themselves and start being a pain, I leave them as long as possible. I will be getting mine done in late September/ early October when it is cooler, but before the frosts come .

As the colt was only born last night that will make him about 4 months old. He'll make a better gelding than a stallion and isn't one I want to keep, so his life will be easier all round without his plums.

My Vet, (who was busy saving the mare) said it won't be a problem and that he often does 4 month old colts.
