When it's blowing a gale, how many of you just...

As far as my horse is concerned i wouldn't have any qualms about riding him in any weather BUT I think it's too dangerous with regards to what debris may be flying about so, on that basis no, i wouldn't ride in this weather! :-)

me too. also I just could not get warm at all yesterday, even in the house with heating on:(

I put mine out, they couldn't stand still, I thought "I'm not riding them, they're getting enough exercise as it is".

Oh the joys of the indoor school! It's in the same barn as the stables so he had enough time to get used to the wind and banging while i chipped away at the 4 inches of mud stuck to him. he was ok to ride, bit spooky but he normally spooks at loads (or loads of nothing) anyway. Defo wouldn't have ridden him if we didn't have the school tho. I value my life, and his too much!!! :-)

Me neither! It's been awful here gale force winds and torrential rain! My pony is spooky at the best off times. We don't have a school so would only be able to hack which is a bit dangerous :(. She's only been ridden once this week I hope the weekend is better.

I think-dont quote me! that shetland nationals you have to be over 10 and under 13 years old?? il start a thread see what happens!!!:D
the proper grand national i think you can be any age?
But im not small enough-im 5ft 1inch but i probably weigh the top end scale of a grand national jockey with extra weights?:D

shetland is only yearling-so you got time to relocate to ireland, get a job a house and then you can spend your days been bucked off by mad chestnut shetland!
the offer of a back protector is very kind.....why dont you do her yourself? much more satisfying for the owner ;) that and my spine just went into spasm?????

O that means im only like 11years too late! noooo!

Ah excellent! (please dont tempt me :D ) would love to move up there!

I have never backed a horse before and was going to do continue ground work with her and pay someone to break her professionally but come to us at home. She lunges etc, will start long reining. She is just a tad flighty and a bit nutty sometimes :) A Point Two Air Jacket then?!? :D

I went, with hubby on bike, to say horse was a tad NOT relaxed is understatement. Oh well, it's done now, but my arms ache from holding him and stopping him running off. Feel lucky to still be alive to be honest, it was too windy and I am silly really.

I ride as normal. My young Tb is fine :). The only thing I don't do is jump just in case the jump blows over, as he's young I wouldn't want to spook him. I'm also wary of riding through woods in gale force winds in case we get squashed by a tree or fallen branch. Otherwise it's business as usual for my horse! He's very good and knuckles down to work :)

I'm in no way a fair weather rider, but I know when to draw the line. I wouldn't ride in weather like yesterdays unless there was a very good reason to. I did turn my boy out, and the torrential sheet rain we had yesterday lunch time, has cleaned his rug up a treat!

The last time I rode in the wind I had to bale!

I stupidly decided to jump in the school in gusty wind on a horse who finds jumping exiting at the best off time, she shot off after a jump, my saddle started to slip & she decided this was the time to start bucking.

So I baled, walked back to the yard & said to a fellow livery, "next time I decide to jump an exitable horse in the wind have a word with me!"

I wouldnt choose to but have to take the hunters out at work, come rain or shine or wind. Sometimes it can be hair raising, but normally im ok. Wish I didnt have to on days like today though!

The only weather I wouldn't ride in is ice - when its slippy underfoot I wouldn't risk them on our steep hills. They don't bother about wind much at all - the only real hazards blowing about are plastic bags, and they're all really good with them. I think its good for them.

I would NEVER jump in the wind - you're just asking for problems with fences falling down etc. Its not a good idea to try - you're just teaching horses to be wary of showjumps, which is not a good plan!

It is still really windy here in the pennines. Next door's shed is roofless, and I did worry about the stables last night when I went out to check them last thing. Even with the top doors shut, the wind was rattling the roof a lot... Thankfully everythings still there. The poor ex battery hens that have been here two weeks must be wondering where they've arrived - first the yard bonfire, and then gales around their house! The wind is meant to drop soon - hope they're right!!

I ride in the wind, normally in the school, but i don't change a thing about the warm up routine. As a result my horse is awesome in all weathers! :D

Funny enought I was gonna ride tonight and then I got out of the car and almost fell over. A spooky welsh in this weather, no ta :D Shame though as it wasnt raining.
