When it's cold really cold

The farmers are running around like loonies preparing for what they describe as a winter like the one three years ago. Panicked just a little and asked how harsh and more when the answer was think -15, -20 overnight :O AHHHHHHHH. It was -10 at worst last year and that was bad enough!.

So erm without wanting to depress people about the upcoming winter anyone wish to share their horsey tips for when it ffffffff cold?

My main one is thinsulate gloves

That might be the forecast for France, but the long range indication here is for a winter only slightly colder than last year, with little precipitation.

Muck heap dancing is an excellent activity for very cold days!
 
thermal winter riding boots.They are brilliant.They save the embarrassment of having to go to the shop in the smelly horse boots that were stood in the muckheap

my horse already has an inch-long coat, I'm not sure she has enough left in her to keep her warm for -20! I jolly well hope she does anyway as I'm not rugging her! I suppose at least she has several inches (feet) of fat to keep her warm...

I have this year bought the Mountain Horse thermal set... absolutely fantastic, keep me SO warm (I'm unlike my horse as I have no natural insulation!). I also have a pair of Atlas Equestrian gloves (those really tough ones) that are fantastic for layering under fleecy gloves. I'd love a pair of those Sealskinz waterproof gloves. I have my Rambo fleecy chaps too and my fleecy Hunter welly warmers. Yum, toasty!
 
Precipitation is anything falling from the sky. That is meant to fall from the sky. So rain, sleet, snow, hail... but not planes, meteors, or people. Not sure about cats and dogs...

Rain, which in winter often falls as snow. However this winter long range is forcast as dry and not very cold over the UK - plenty of time for them to change their minds yet, though
 
top tip: put an empty dustbin under the yard tap and leave it dripping regularly (about 1 drip a second) all night... it's just enough to stop it freezing, usually, and you have a full bin of water for morning stables.
took me years to work that one out.

ski snugglers, those pull-on neck-warmers, are totally brilliant. and a fleece-lined hat.

Well we have snow forecast here for wednesday - friday. Im actually in the UK then so i hope it wont be following me but its early to be having these temperatures even by scandinavian standards.
 
Never tried the suede chaps but I second the rest. Plus thermal undies as well, waterproof overtrousers, at least two pairs of gloves, plus waterproof jacket with liner etc. etc. I hate the cold.

Luckily podge thinks it's going to be mild this winter judging by his fur coat which seems to be less thick than normal.

If you can buy Carharts and Kodiak boots, complete the outfit with a fur trappers hat and Canadian-made gloves then you should be fine.

Thinsulate are nowhere near warm enough for where I live - we have to go outside looking like Michelin men for months on end LOL!!

Coldest since I have been here was -40 with a -45 windchill.....now THAT is cold! -15 is a breeze
