My 3 yr old colt is almost a month into his reining training now he has a nice slide in his stop, small controlled spins and side passes and counter canters already. My trainer and I feel he is learning exceptionally quickly but i dont want to overwhelm him by putting the sliders on too soon. Of course i would start with some "baby sliders" but i also don't know how much a set of sliders usually cost? I dont want to be over charged this is my first time showing in reining so any tips are welcome!! is there any special care i should take with the sliders when they do get put on as ive heard they can be pulled quite easily? TIA!

Your trainer would be best placed to advise.

A good reining trainer will have started lots of horses and introduced them to sliders.

I'm presuming you're in America? Prices will differ as sliders are specialised and pretty rare over here.

Can I ask a numpty question? What are sliders? Sounds like some sort of special shoe? Just a discipline I don't know much about! :)

I tried to post a photo but I'm incompetent on this forum!

If you google reining sliders it will bring up images of them.

Basically they are wide, smooth, longer horse shoes that go on the hind feet. They enable the back end to slide to make a big "sliding stop". So the horse "breaks in two" with the quarters coming under and legs sliding while the front legs "paddle" along in the hope of a big, smooth stop leaving "11s" in their trail on the surface.

If you look up sliding stop on YouTube that will show you better than I can explain!
