Soap is starting to get his winter coat peeping through, and I'm thinking about clipping him before Moreton in Oct so he doesn't get too hot.

What is the earliest/latest you should clip?...

People tend to clip all year round nowadays. I think 'officially' you aren't supposed to clip later than the end of January as it interferes with the summer coat coming through.

To be honest if they are not show horses whenever they need it. Poppy was clipped last week and Sarnie will be done later. Generally tha latest for finishing clipping is January but I sometimes clip Sarnie through the summer.

I would clip sooner rather than later this time of year as they can loose condition with all the extra sweating.

There is no 'earliest/latest' in my book. I clip when he needs it and keep clipping till he doesn't. I've often clipped before my last event of the season, though I try and avoid it because clipping sucks and the fewer times I have to do it the better IMO!

i'm in the same situation... umming and ahhing about whether i have to clip before Moreton.

i am hoping not to as horse is meant to be having a holiday in october and i'd rather she was hairy for that

ah ha that's where you need my mega guy who clips out in full in under 45mins for £20!!!! and does a fab job

Think I may give him a call, can't stand horse hair getting in my bra and eyes!!!

The joys of a part-cob!

No "set in stone" time of when to clip, although they do say to not clip after January, but think that is more in line with showing people. My TB was clipper last weekend as she was starting to look like a teddybear......

Doing mine either next weekend or sometime next week - he looks like a teddy! Last year I did a blanket this time of year as gave him a month off at end of season but due to leg he's had a fairly quiet summer so won't bother with holiday this year, and want him loking half respectable for comp 10th Oct - so need a couple of weeks regrowth before then!

As and when I need to!
Currently trying my hardest not to clip Tink before Weston as a white horse clipped is not a pretty sight, last time I had lines for about 2 months

I think I may be fighting a loosing battle though!

I clipped Baileys before Aston Le Walls in August as he was getting quite fluffy and sweating loads. The whole lot came off then inlcuding legs and head. Apart from a feint triangle above his tail you can't tell that he had been clipped. I will do him again weekend ready for Keysoe but only 1/2 head and no legs this time..

Donkey is going fluffy, Buck however cannot be found as he is hidden under a pile of rugs to keep the winter coat at bay until the end of the month!

Mine isnt even starting to go furry yet

Am going to hold off for aslong as possible as don't know what she is like to clip yet!!

Goddy often got clipped from September onwards, and through the summer where necessary!!

Mine wont be clipped till november at the earliest

But if your horse needs clipped, clip, if not, then dont!

Henry would have been clipped weeks ago if he was in full work, but then if he had been in full work he would have been clipped out all summer.
His summer coat is like most normal horses winter coats and he way more comfortable clipped out.

clipped on sunday but he is native! had to get it off that neck as he was getting ridiculously sweaty the minute we did any proper work.

I clipped mine last week. He is 1/4 sect D and 1/4 conn so was quite hairy and he hates being hot. Very glad I did it as he did a PN on Sunday in 23 degrees, he'd have melted with his fluff still on!!!

I clip when he needs clipping.....

I clipped my ISH today as he was becoming a wooly monster and he looks soo much better. He will be more comfortable as he is ridden everyday and going BSJA tomorrow so he needed it, and he looks great.....I am very particular when clipping, its got to look good! so go for it.

Last year I gave my horse his first clip in the second week of september, and last one in the middle of January. This year I'll leave it a bit later, but only because I moved to Ireland a couple of weeks ago and he had two weeks off before I went and the last two weeks off as his holiday because it fitted well with my move. He arrived at the weekend and I'm dying to clip him because he is so fluffy, but I'll wait until he is working and is a bit fitter.

Bloomin 'eck that's less than half what I have to pay. Am planning on investing in my own set of clippers as reckon I'll have recouped my costs in under two years however don't really want to spend £200 right now but the girl is sweating very heavily with fast work although doesn't look to have much of a coat.

Think I'll be clipping before the end of the month though

I clip Shiney all year round even to show him. Mick will be clipped in the next 2 weeks either by myself or my instructor. I will only need Mick clipping 2 or 3 times and don't clip him after January.

The ponies are beging to resemble walking rugs so i will propably do them within the next week or so. The TB's and warmblood havent got a long hair between them so hopefully will be late Oct early Nov before they get done, although OH has already clipped 3 this week for clients

My cob-X was clipped (blanket) on Sat. She gets very wooly very quickly and I've still an ODE and a HT to do so will be comfier for her. I go by how the horse/coat/workload is rather than what the date is. Last year it was mid-Oct before I clipped but she was only in very light work last year.

Chloe- That's a very good deal you have for a fast, good clip!
