hi, just wondering when's the earliest i should clip my horsey. he has got that slightly fuzzy look going on already and a beard!

the first yr i decided to clip him i left it till november. was a last minute decision becoz he jst got sooo sweaty and was still damp the next morning. (lives out 24/7) then last yr i did it early october. i'd paid someone to do him for me on those occasions. now i am armed and ready with clippers and blades of my own :) i will only do him once as he only tends to get sweaty oct-dec. last yr i had him redone a second time, but i felt he needed his coat back by jan/feb when it got cold. he only gets a little low trace.

If he only gets sweaty in October then I would wait until late September, early October, rather than clipping him now because he's getting hairy. I'd leave it as late as possible if you only want to clip him once, but there is nothing wrong with clipping him again so he's comfortable when you ride him, then rugging him up a bit more. I wouldn't clip again after the end of January though, as that would affect his new coat coming through.

Yes i was wondering too! My boy turned 4 this summer & has never been clipped before. He's a 14.1hh cob & I've never met a pony that grows such a thick winter coat as him. Everyone is shocked by his hairiness! He lives out 24/7 and will get extremely sweaty once his winter coat arrives. I'm anticipating a trace or blanket clip perhaps. He's only in light work-hacking 5 or 6x p.wk with some schooling. He's got plenty of rugs. I guess I'll go by levels of sweatiness as to when/if he needs it!

Not clipping the oldie this year :) hes in semi retirement now happy hacking in winter :) But normally he got his first full clip in October then another in Dec if I was riding and showing then another in Feb and that was normally all I had to do other than use my little trimmers on his legs (shown PB welsh ;) )

This year he can have as much hair as he wants and be a fluffy bear. Baby pony on the other hand will be getting a full clip in October IF we get to do anything this winter.

my 27yr old mare has had her 2nd clip of the year today, well not including last winter's clips! but I am now going to keep her clipped all year round! as she's a giant fluff ball and its easier to keep her clean when she's clipped!

I think if they are getting sweaty now, you could do it now, its more of an issue when you do the last winter clip too late as it can effect the growth of their summer coat! I have always clipped mid to late Sept but started again in July this year! and tend to try and do it once a month if I can!

i'd say in your case if your horse gets sweaty in october i'd say end of september

i've already clipped two of mine - the others only a year old so he wont be getting clipped - they are both PBW's and get quite heairy and hot when they are working so it all comes off! the 4yo has everything off inc legs and face. the other one - 7yo who can be funny to clip has a hunter clip so legs and face left on both are happy and rugged although the 7yo has turned ferral and is pretending to be scared of her rug

My mare is already very fuzzy and got sweaty today riding so I will probably clip her in 1-2 weeks which is a lot earlier than I would normally. I am doing a area festival mid October so will have to take it all off!

I clip both my girls quite early compared to everyone else it seems! Usually by mid sept they are both clipped - the pony is very hairy, and my mare gets very sweaty very quickly - so as soon as they're getting wooly they get their fluff whipped off.

Will clip as soon as the temperature drops - don't like him getting sweaty when it's cooler.

Mine is like yeti just now - I gave him a trace clip a few weeks ago and it's totally grown out already.
