I posted about wanting to send my mare to Meadow Stud next year. I'm just wondering when the best time that would be (obviously arranging with the stud). I was thinking mid-March

I have the facilities for a February/March foal but I doubt this will happen as the mare has yet to conceive. Would love to hear your opinions

Amy had her first insemination April this year - so would have gone to stud then at the earliest.

I was not keen on having a March Foal, much preferring it to have been an April/May baby - but for various reasons we started with her in April.

Mid-March is a good time to start. Aim to start no later than mid-April, or as soon after that as is possible if your mare is due to foal later in the year.

With a careful lighting and rugging programme, you can start your mares cycling earlier in the year, and could send them to stud in late January or early February.

Sending them off to stud in July is not ideal, and Ausust or September should be no-go areas.

It may be different over here but I've watched my lot and found that they don't tend to have their first proper seasons of the year till the beginning of May, so this is when I'd send mine off, or perhaps wait till June as the weather in May is better than in April.

We dont like to take maiden or barren mares in before 1st April unless they have been under lights and properly prepared otherwise they just stand there racking up a bill for the owner.
Mares that have just foaled up have been prepared correctly i will happily take in anytime after 1st Feb which gives us a few days for the mare to settle and get ready before the 14th Feb earliest covering deadline.

my silly mare started early in Feb this year with no lighting or rugging specifically, but I waited until her may season to put her in foal. I've had a late july foal (ended up being late and born on 1st August) and it was a nightmare so thats why I left empty for a year and started earlyish next time.

i sent shantih in feb.she had been under lights since november.(took ages for a follicle to get to 3cm though!)
she caught first time and had a march foalit worked out fine as i had facilitieseven though the week before she foaled it was snow drifts everywhere!lol
i think its best to send mares that are unknown(ie never had one or missed years out) early after being under lights.this way you have plenty of time to try for a foal all season.
obviously you would like the grass but not to much heat/flies or a young foal going into winter.

I'm going to start at the mid/end of April with Hattie as we ran out of time starting in May. I don't want a too early foal so a April/may foal would be best for me.
I've been told to get hold of Meadow Stud now to make sure they would take Hattie and see if they want to see her now to try to remove some of this fluid before winter. My bosses vet said that is what she would do.

my mare's foals have been born mid March to end of April. Last year she foaled at the end of April then we tried only twice to get her in foal and she didn't take. By then after only 2 attempts it was the 1st of July and the stud in Germany finished then.
last winter she was brought back into light work and rugged up. She had her transient cycle in March. She then went to stud and was covered on 2nd April and took 1st time. Therefore I'd reccommend starting early because i I've noticed that those who didn't start until later this year had real problems and it isn't many cycles before it becomes tool ate.

Han was inseminated on 27th March 2006 (she went to stud on 19th) and had Troy, as you all know, 11 days late on 12th March 2007

We had some of our best weather earlier in the year, and things have worked out really well because when it was absolutely horendous he was 4 months old and could still stay out.

last year i did it late as i wanted to compete my mare at hickstead so was inseminated in July then i had the twin problem and decided this year to inseminate my new broodmare early !!

we sent her in May and she took first time so looking for an april baby next year !!!
