When to spay a dane/first season question

My great dane is almost 10 months old, she has not yet had her first heat and I'm assuming she will in the next few months (is this correct?).
Is is ok to spay a bitch as soon as she has had her first season? Or are you advised to wait a certain amount of time after?
Anyone with some experience please let me know what you think, obviously I will speak with my vet, but I'm interested in what others suggest.
 
Three months after the season but if you can wait until over 18 months to allow her to grow up a bit (physically) first.
 
As above after a 1st season, but I would aim for the 14 month mark, her growth (as in height) which is the main thing will be done by then and she is less likely to be near a 2nd season at the 14 month mark than the 18 and I personally would not allow a bitch a second season your are then increasing the chances of mammary cancers later in life.

Just my opinion though:p
