As I'm in the same boat as many other regarding running out of old hay, I wondered when you feel that it is safe to start feeding new?
I've always understood that you shouldn't feed it before October, at the earliest, and indeed, it's usually been about Xmas before I have, in the past.
I do soak - 8 to 12 hours. Does this make enough difference to the nutritional value to cancel out the 'newness'?
One of mine is a hairy marey, who has once had slight lami, so feeding haylage as an alternative is not the answer for her (well not in summer, anyway).
Next year I'l make blooming sure I get enough in early enough to last me through!
